A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF BAKERSFIELD PROCLAIMING
APRIL 22, 1990 "EARTH DAY 1990" IN
THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD.
WHEREAS, almost twenty years ago, more than twenty
million Americans joins together on Earth Day in a demonstration
of concern for the environment creating an informed public whose
collective action resulted in the passage of sweeping new laws to
protect our air, water and land; and
WHEREAS, in the nineteen years since the first Earth
Day, despite enviror~ental improvements, the environmental health
of the planet is increasingly endangered; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 is a national and
international call to action for all citizens to join in a global
effort to protect the planet; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will
educate all citizens; on the importance of acting in an
environmentally sensitive fashion by recycling, conserving energy
and water, using efficient transportation, and adopting more
ecologically sound lifestyles; and
WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 activities and events will help
educate consumers in the importance of using their purchasing
power to protect the environment; and
WHEREAS, human choices created our environmental
problems and better human choices are necessary to solve them;
and
WHEREAS, Earth Day 1990 launches the "Decade of the
Environment;" and
WHEREAS, increasing environmental awareness and
commitment to personal action is evident among the citizens of
Bakersfield and Kern County.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the
City of Bakersfield that April 22, 1990 is proclaimed as Earth
Day 1990 in the City of Bakersfield and that that day shall be
designated for public activities to address environmental issues.

passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a
