A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF TH~ CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD RECOGNIZING AND SUPPORTING
OCTOBER 28, 1989 AS "KERN COUNTY RECYCLING
DAY" IN THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD.
WHEREAS, Americans are realizing that recycling of
glass, paper, plastic, metals and other materials makes good
economic sense, as well as ecological sense; and
WHEREAS, a nationwide "landfill crisis" has brought
home the point that people can no longer afford simply to throw
away items for which they have no immediate use; and
WHEREAS, society pays the price for such wastefulness
in the costs of maintaining still larger landfills and in higher
energy usage and greater damage to the environment; and
WHEREAS, recycling can ease each of these problems,
extending the life of existing landfill sites and reducing the
amount of energy and. natural resources required to make packaging
materials; and
WHEREAS, the sheer volume of recyclable material which
daily is thrown away' points toward the need for a major
educational campaign to inform City of Bakersfield residents of
the recycling option.; and
WHEREAS, we encourage the residents of City of
Bakersfield to participate in "Kern County Recycling Day,"
October 28, 1989.
NOW, T~R~EFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the
City of Bakersfield does hereby recognize Saturday, October 28,
1989 as "KERN COUNTY RECYCLING DAY" in acknowledgement of the
important role recycling can play in improving the quality of
life for all Kern residents; and
BE IT FUNT~R~ RESOLVED that the members of this Council
urge all City residents to use the recycling centers which exist
now and push for the establishment of more such programs in the
future.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was
passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a
regular meeting thereof held on 0CI ~ 1 1989 , by the
