ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION
Fig. 1
FI~. 2
Fig. 4
If victim appears to be un-
conscious, tap victim on the
shoulder and shout, "Are
you okay? Look, listen &
feel for breathina.
If victim is not breathina,
beain artificial respiration at
once.
Tilt the victim's head back-

ward (Fig. 1).
Pinch nose closed. Place
your mouth ti§htly around
victim's mouth and blow into
his mouth (Fig. 2).
Volume is important.
Blow quickly four times.
Check for the pulse at the
side of the neck (Fi§. 3) for
five (5) seconds. If there is
no pulse, and no breathing,
be§in CPR if you have been
trained. Classes are avail-

Watch victim's chest to see
when it rises. Stop blowing
when chest is expanded;
raise your mouth; turn your
head' tO'side and listen for
exhalation (Fig. 4). Watch

FIRST AID FOR CHOKING
CONSCIOUS VICTIM
A person who has a com-
pletely blocked airway can-
not breathe, cough or speak.
Ask, "Can you speak?" If
not, the victim's airway is
completely blocked. Give
four back blows high up bet-
ween the shoulder blades.
The head should be lower
than the chest, if possible
(Fig. 5),
· If unsuccessful -- stand
behind victim, wrap your
arms around victim's mid-
die, just above the na~/el.
Clasp your fist with your
other hand and press into
· the victim's abdomen with
four (4) quick upward
thrusts (Fig. 6),
If four back blows and four
thrusts do not work, repeat
the sequence.
(Do not give up!)
UNCONSCIOUS VICTIM
If you have tilted the
victim's head backward and
tried to breathe for the vic-
tim but you are not getting
air exchanae, and there is
no foreign material visible in
the mouth, turn the victim
on his side and strike bet-
ween the shoulder blades
fdur (4) times (Fi§. 7).
Roll the victim on his back
and give four abdominal
thrusts by placing the heel
of one hand between the rib
cage and the navel and
thrusting upwards towards
the head (Fla. 8).
Wipe foreign matter from
the mouth with fingers (Fig.
9), and try to give breaths
