HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 161-89RESOLUTION NO. 161-89 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD SUPERSEDING RESOLUTION 23-89 TO INCLUDE A BOYCOTT OF MEETINGS IN THE CITIES OF BERKELEY AND SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA. WHEREAS, the farmers and growers of the San Joaquin Valley have enjoyed a reputation for producing the finest of fruits and vegetables; and WHEREAS, the grape growers of the San Joaquin Valley are involved in a labor dispute; and, as part of said dispute, they have had their produce labeled as being unfit; and WHEREAS, there is no basis in fact for such allegation; and WHEREAS, the City and County of San Francisco as well as the City of Berkeley and the City of San Jose have undertaken to lend credence to such an allegation by boycotting the purchase of grapes for their facilities in an effort to inflict damage to the grape industry, and agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley in general. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield as follows: 1. That Reso)ution No. 23-89 is hereby superseded; 2. That the City Clerk is hereby authorized, ordered and directed to forward a certified copy of this resolution to the City and County of San Francisco, the City of Berkeley, and the City of San Jose, urging them to reverse their boycotts; 3. That the City Council of the City of Bakersfield, pending the reversal of the position of the City and County of San Francisco, the City of Berkeley, and the City of San Jose, does hereby declare that the City of Bakersfield, its officers and employees, will not be permitted to attend any meetings, gatherings or conventions in these cities during the 1989-90 fiscal year; and 4. That the City Manager of the City of Bakersfield is hereby directed to communicate and advise each of the groups, organizations, and bodies in which the City of Bakersfield might participate, in which meetings, seminars, or conventions might be scheduled in San Francisco, Berkeley, or San Jose of the City's position so that such meetings might be rescheduled for other cities in the area. .......... o0o ..........
