As such, we are now required to implement safety and training guidelines for the handling of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in our restaurants. It is important that the guidelines and procedures described below are implemented to ensure safety and to avoid fines. Documents 1. Brinker International Carbon Dioxide Training document 2. Employee Training Documentation Form 3. Emergency Response / Contingency Plan The following items need to be done immediately: · This Memorandum must be reviewed with all members of the management team, and then retained in the Emergency Procedures tab of the Safety Notebook. Your County may require a Hazardous Materials Business Plan to be filed with local authorities. If your County has this requirement, you will be provided with a copy of the Hazardous Materials Business Plan that has been filed with the appropriate local authorities.' Your copy of the Hazardous Materials Business Plan must be kept in the Emergency Procedures tab of the Safety Notebook at .all times. · All employees must read the Brinker International Carbon Dioxide Training document before June'27, 2003. All employees must sign and date the Employee Training Documentation form indicating that they have read and understand the Carbon Dioxide Training document. This form must be retained in the Emergency Procedures Tab in the Safety Notebook. All Carbon Dioxide containers must be identified and the location of each container made known to all employees. The EmergenCy Response Contingency Plan must be filled out and posted near the Employee Communication board. A copy must be retained in the Emergency Procedures Section of the Safety Notebook. Ensure the following items are in place to validate the Emergency Response Contingency Plan: 1. Store must have a Personal Protective Equipment (P.P.E.) station mounted next to the Right To Know Station (MSDS Binder). This station must include rubber apron, gloves, and goggles. You can order the PPE station and products from Ecolab: · Wall-mounted station with hooks for PPE gear (Item #9297-2389) · Accessory Kit- rubber gloves, apron, & goggles (Item #9290-1354) 2. Store must have an Emergency Evacuation Plan completed and posted on the emplOyee communication board. The Evacuation Plan template and instructions can be found in the Safety Notebook in the Emergency Procedures Section. 3. Make sure your store's First Aid kit is stocked with the required products, includinq eyewash products. See First Aid Section in your Safety Notebook for a list of required products and ordering information. Required Eyewash Products: · Eye Wash 4oz-Item # 1337 · Eye Wash Cups- Item # 1343 4. Inspect all fire extinguishers in the restaurant to make sure they are: · Properly mounted · Charged · Current Inspection Tags (inspected every.12 months). New employees must sign and date the Employee Training Documentation form. Annually Every employee must review the Carbon Dioxide Training Document and sign off on the Employee Training Document form. This can be accomplished during the store's all-employee meeting.) · The Chemical Inventory Sheet must be re-certified by March 1. The Chemical' Inventory Sheet is part of the filed Business Plan. Every Three (3) Years · The entire Business Plan must be re-certified. Tri_qqer Events The entire Business Plan mUst be amended and re-certified whenever (a) there is an increase of 100% or more of any reported material, (b) any previously unreported material is brought onto the site, or (c) there is any change in the business address, ownership or name. For restaurants in the State of California ONLY: All employees are required to read and understand the following training information on Carbon Dioxide. Document the employee's name and the date they read this document on the attached Employee Documentation she, et. EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION. In the event of an emergency situation arising in connection with Carbon Dioxide, the Manager on duty will verbally advise all employees (and, if necessary, guests) of the situation. If evacuation is necessary, the Manager will notify all employees and guests to evacuate the building in accordance with the Emergency Evacuation Plan. ABOUT CARBON DIOXIDE. Carbon Dioxide (commonly known as CO2) is used in connection with the beverage dispensing system. Carbon Dioxide is stored at the restaurant in cylindrical containers. Carbon Dioxide is stored in the containers at extremely Iow temperatures. At such Iow temperatures, Carbon Dioxide is in liquid form. When dispensed through the beverage system, the Carbon Dioxide is converted' to gas. Carbon Dioxide is a gas at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature. Carbon Dioxide is 1.5 times the weight of air. Carbon Dioxide is an asphyxiant. Carbon Dioxide may cause frostbite from contact as a solid, liquid or Iow temperature gas. Carbon Dioxide is relatively non-reactive and non-toxic. Carbon Dioxide will react with chemically active metals such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, zinc, lithium and hot titanium. These chemically active metals are not present in the restaurants. INJURY INFORMATION. Carbon Dioxide is stored under pressure in tanks and can be a hazard to eyes or skin. For eye injuries, immediately flush eyes with large quantities of water. Then, immediately seek' medical help. For skin injuries and/or frostbite, wash thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Then, immediately seek medical help. Inhalation of Carbon Dioxide in excess of TLV and PEL concentrations can cause shortness of breath, headache, increased respiratory rate, ringing the ears and unconsciousness. Seek immediate medical attention. SMALL SPILL. Do not touch or walk through material. Always use protective clothing, gloves and goggles or face shield to prevent contact with gas or solid Carbon Dioxide. Use water spray to reduce vapors or divert vapor cloud drift. Avoid allowing water to runoff or contact spilled material. Do not direct water spray at spill or source of leak. possible, turn leaking containers so that gas escapes rather than liquid. Because Carbon Dioxide is 1.5 times the weight of air, it may settle in ditches, pits and Iow places. If FIRE. Carbon Dioxide is an extinguishing agent. In case of fire, refer to the Brinker Emergency Procedures for Fire Evacuation Procedures located either in your Safety Notebook or on the BrinkerNet, click on Risk Management / Emergency Procedures. EXPLOSION. Carbon Dioxide is stable under normal ambient conditions of temperature and pressure. In case of explosion, refer to the Brinker Emergency Procedures for Fire Evacuation Procedures located either in your Safety Notebook or on the BrinkerNet, click on Risk Management / Emergency Procedures. EARTHQUAKE. Carbon Dioxide is stable under normal ambient conditions of temperature and pressure. Keep away from the Carbon Dioxide container(s) during earthquake activity.
