Personnel involved in the clean-up should wear a respirator, rubber gloves, and a common rubber lab apron. . If the contents of a lithium Thionyl Chloride Cell are thrown out of the cell casing during such an event, thionyl chloride, sulfur dioxide, and hydrochloric acid vapors will be present and lithium as well as thionyl chloride saturated carbon would be exposed. If the lithium involved in this incident is On fire, extinguish with lith-X (a graphite Class D fire extinguishing agent) powder. , , . <DO NOT USE WATER All personnel involved in the clean-up should Wear a respirator, rubber gloves, common rubber lab-apron, and boots. Sodium carbonate should be spreaéf Over all parts exposed which are not burning. Yardney Technical Products Lithium Thionyl Chloride Batteries are high energy SOUrces and must be handled with care. Precautions must be taken during handling and storage. They should be stored in the original shipping containers in which you receive them. Do not store in unguarded locations. Because ambient temperature affects the shelf life and f?erformance of the Yardney lithium Thionyl Chloride Cells, it is suggested that cells be stored in as cold an environment as possible. It is preferred that cells not be stored in areas where the temperature could exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period of time. The recommended storage temperatures have no impact on the safe behavior of our lithium Thionyl Chloride Cells. All precautions have been taken by Yardney Technical Products to insure that short circuiting of these batteries does not Occur. Insulation has been placed around the entire metal surface of the cell body and on tabs which are external. Please be sure that these are not removed and that cells and batteries are not stored in such a manner that short circuiting could OCcur through these connections. R fvllt'd . M.,y 30, 1 'J'JO ·, " .. ~,. " , -,...--'" - - , These cells and batteries should not be placed or stored on metal surfaces where the metal surface could become a part of the short circuit: If one is shorted and heats up, it should be immediately disconnected from the load. If possible, it should be cooled with ice or dry ice. Tongs or other mechanical devices should be used for handling such a cell/battery. Protective equipment should be worn when handling such an item. . The Yardney Lithium Thionyl Chloride'Battery~ never be charaed, Devices such as diodes should be used to prevent reverse current flow (charging). Under t!Q circumstances should one of our Lithium Thionyl Chloride Cells be opened, punctured, crushed or incinerated. These types of events could e)(pose personnel to the thianyl chloride electrolyte as well as the flammable solid lithium. When a lithium Thionyl Chloride Cell is assembled and wired into a multi..cell. battery, (uses or current-limiting devices shall be installed in the circuitry. Cells or batteries connected in parallel must be ~rotected by a diode as indicated by the Department of Transportation Exemption DOT-E70S2. For disposai purposes, the safest method of shipping a Yardney Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery to a disposing agency is by discharging the unit at its normal load until the battery has reached zero VOc. The load should be taken from the battery and the open circuit voltage monitored. I( the battery does not recover to over 0.5 OCV after one hour, it is totally discharged and IS safer to handle in preparation for packaging or disposal. If the voltage does recover to over 0.5 OCV In one hour, the load sliould be reapplied (or 24 hours and monitored on open circuit again untílhalf a volt or less is stabl~ (over one hour). Packaging o( lithium batteries (or dispos<\1 is quoted from the Code of Federal Regulations #49, dated October 1,1987, Para. 173.1015: (a) lithium batteries, for disposal, con:,prised of one or more cells, may be offered for transportation to a permitted storage facility and disposal site by motor vehicle only, i( the battery: . 1. Precautions must be taken during handling and storage. They should be stored in the original shipping containers in which you receive them. Do not store in unglJarded locQtion5. Because ambient temperature affects the shelf life and J?erformanc:e of the Yardney lithium Thionyl ChlOride Cells, it is suggested that cells be stored in as cold an environment as p'osslble. It is preferred tñat cells not be stored In areas where the temperature could exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit for an extended period of time. The recommended storage t~lT1peratlJres have no impact on the safe behavior of our Lithium Thionyl Chloñde Cells. All precautions have been taken by Yardney Technical Products to insure that short circuiting of these batteries does not occur. Insulation has been placed arouhd the èntlre metal swíace of the cell body and on tabs which are external. Please be sure tnatlnese are not removed and that cells and batteries are not stored in such a manner that short circuiting could occur thrOllgh these connections. R..-Iud . Under I ~ circumstanc:es should one of cur Lithium Thioflyl Chloride Cells be opened . I punctured, crushed or incinerated. These typ. es Of events could expose personnel to the thionyl chloride eleC1rolyte as well as the flammable solid lithium. When a lithium Thíortyl Chloride Cell is assembled and wired into a multi-cell battery, fuses or current-limiUng devices shall be installed in the circuitry. Cells or batteries connected in parallel must be p-roteded by a diode as Indicated by the Department of Transportation Exemption OOT-e70S2. For disposal purposes, the safest method of shipping ¡ Yardney Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery to a disposing agency is by discliargir'll the unit at its normal load until the battery has reachea zero VDC, The load should be taken from the battery and the open circuit voltage monitored. If the battery does not recover to over O.S OCV after one hour it Is totally discharged and IS sarer to handle in preparation for packaging or disposal. If tt1e voltage does recover to over O.S OCV In one hour, the load snould tie reapplied ror 24 hours and monitored on open circuit again until half a volt or less is stable (over one hour), . Packaging of lithium batteries (or disposal Is quoted from the Cede of Federal Regulations #49, dated October 1,1987, Para.
