1.0 Executive Summary
At the request of Crisp Construction, AquaGeosciences, Inc.
conducted oversight of bioremediation procedures for eliminating
hydrocarbon impacted soil at Sundale Country Club, 6218 Sundale
Avenue, Bakersfield, California. The remedial assessment was
initiated after soil samples were collected at the tank removal and
indicated that hydrocarbons were present in the soil beneath the
former gasoline tank at a depth of approximately 12 feet. The
remediation consisted of excavating and segregating approxiamtely
100 cubic yards of hydrocarbon impacted soil and bioremediating the
soil.
On December 24, 1991, Crisp Construction excavated approximately
100 cubic yards of soil. The soii was segregated into "clean" and
"contaminated" stockpiles. On December 24, 1991, AquaGeosciences,
Inc. collected five (5) confirmation soil samples, one from the
base and four sidewalls. The soil samples were submitted to SMC
Laboratory for analysis using the California DOHS LUFT Method/EPA
Method 5030 for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline and
volatile aromatics (BTEX) using EPA Method 8020, respectively. The
laboratory reported that concentrations of TPH as gasoline were not
detected in any of the samples collected from the four sidewalls.
Minimal concentrations of TPH as gasoline (6 ug/g) and volatile
aromatics (BTEX) were detected in the sample collected from the
base of the excavation.
On January 14, 1992, Crisp Construction further excavated the pit
area approximately two (2) additional feet. On January 14, 1992,
AquaGeosciences, Inc. collected one (1) soil sample from the base
of the addi tional excavation. The laboratory reported
concentrations of fuel hydrocarbons as gasoline and volatile
aromatics were not detected.
On the basis of the laboratory analysis, hydrocarbons in the soil
has been completely removed. The additional soil was segregated
into "clean" and "contaminated" stockpiles. The "clean" soil
segregated from the excavation was used as additional backfill. On
January 21, 1992, approximately 60 cubic yards of "contaminated"
soil was prepared for bioremediation.
Bioremediation of the soil consisted of placing the contaminated
soil in a mixing truck where nutrients and microbes were added.
This process constituted the initial innoculation. After the soil,
microbes and nutrients were thoroughly mixed, the soil was spread
on visquene and covered for 30 days.
Remediation of hydrocarbons in the soil has been completed and six
(6) confirmation composite soil samples were collected by
AquaGeosciences, Inc. on February 24, 1992. The laboratory
reported that concentrations of TPH as gasoline were not detected
in any of the samples submitted for final analysis.

It is the opinion of AquaGeosciences, Inc. that based on the
laboratory analysis after excavation and bioremediation, no further
work related to subsurface contamination or soil treatment is
warranted.
2.0 Background
The Sundale Country Club is located at 6218 Sundale Avenue,
Bakersfield, California as shown on Exhibit 1.
2.1 Facility Description
The facility is shown to scale on Exhibit 2. Previously located at
the site was one (1) 450 gallon underground gasoline storage tank.
2.2 Project History
On July 29, 1991, Crisp Construction removed one (450) gallon
gasoline underground storage tank from the above described property
location. soil samples were collected from beneath the removed
tank at 8 and 11 foot depths and beneath the dispenser at a depth
of 3'6". The samples were analyzed for Total Petroleum
Hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline and Volatile Aromatics (BTEX). The
analytical results indicated gasoline concentrations of 6400 ppm at
3'6" at the south end of the excavation, 160 ppm at 8 feet and 20
ppm at 11 feet beneath the gasoline tank.
Due to the significant decrease in concentration levels and the
apparently limited volume of impacted soil, a site characterization
was not warranted; however, as a consequence of the transfer of
this property, the new buyer required the impacted soil be
bioremediated on site. Crisp Construction contracted with
AquaGeosciences, Inc. to prepare a workplan for bioremediation,
which was approved in January, 1992 by Joe Dunwoody of the City of
Bakersfield Hazardous Materials Division. After approval of the
workplan, Crisp Construction implemented the bioremediation and
AquaGeosciences, Inc. provided the geological oversight and
prepared this report of findings.
3.0 Assessment Activities
Field activities included excavating approximately 100 cubic yards
of hydrocarbon impacted soil in the vicinity of the former gasoline
tank. The "contaminated" soil was prepared for bioremediation,
spread over visquene on site and treated for approximately 30 days.
3.1 Excavation Procedures
The soil was excavated using a back-hoe and segregated into "clean"
and "contaminated" stockpiles. Crisp Construction performed the
excavation, removal, bioremediation and backfilling services.
AquaGeosciences, Inc. provided the geological oversight for this

project. The "clean" stockpile was stored on-site for later use as
backfill material.
3.2 Field Screening of Soil - Excavation
Soil samples were collected from the backhoe bucket near the teeth
of the bucket and then placed in a mason jar to approximately 50%
capaci ty , shaken, and stored for a period of 15 minutes. A
standard headspace was collected at this time and noted on daily
field logs.
3.3 Confirmation Soil Sampling - Excavation
The soil samples were collected from the base and four sidewalls
immediately after excavation. The soil samples were collected in
QOR PAK jars to 100% capacity. Five (5) confirmation soil samples
were sealed, labeled in accordance with EPA Protocols, recorded on
Chain-of-Custody documents placed in a cooler at 4w centigrade and
transported to SMC Laboratory, a California state certified
laboratory, with the Chain-of-Custody for the specified analysis.
3.4 Analytical Results - Excavation
The soil samples were analyzed by SMC Laboratory, a state certified
laboratory, for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline,
using the California DOHS LUFT Method/EPA Method 5030, and for the
fuel constituent volatile aromatics benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene,
and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Method 8020, respectively.
The laboratory analysis indicated that concentrations of TPH as
gasoline were not detected in any of the samples collected from the
four sidewalls. TPH as gasoline was reported at 6 ug/g from the
sample collected at the base of the excavation. BTEX was detected
at minimal concentrations also at the base. Please Note: on
January 14, 1992, an additional two feet (2') was excavated from
the base and one (1) sample was collected and analyzed. The
laboratory reported that TPH as gasoline and BTEX were not
detected. The laboratory reports and Chain-of-custody are included
as Appendix A.
4.0 Bioremediation Procedures
On January 21, 1992, approximately 60 cubic yards of "contaminated"
soil was placed in a mixing truck where nutrients and microbes were
added. After the soil, nutrients and microbes were thoroughly
mixed, the soil was spread over visquene in a treatment staging
area approximately 28 x 34 feet at approximately eighteen inches of
thickness.

4.1 Field Screening of Soil - Bioremediation
Field screening of the bioremediation pile was accomplished by grid
sampling, (six sample locations; one every ten yards of soil). At
each sample location a sample was collected in a mason jar and
filled to approximately 50% capacity. The mason jar was shaken and
let stand for approximately 15 minutes. The top of the mason jar
was pierced and the probe of a Thermo Instrument 580A PID was
inserted for collection of a headspace reading. The headspace for
all grid sample locations after the treatment process indicated
"non-detect" values and confirmation samples were collected for
analysis.
4.2 Confirmation Soil Sampling - Bioremediation
Six (6) confirmation soil samples were collected from the treated
soil. The sample locations were chosen by dividing the entire pile
into six sections (approximately 10 cubic yards). The soil samples
were collected in QOR PAK jars, capped, sealed, labeled in
accordance with EPA Protocols, recorded on Chain-of-Custody
documents, placed in a cooler at 4v centigrade or less and
transported to a California certified laboratory with the Chain-of-
Custody for the specified analysis.
4.3 Analytical Results - Bioremediation
The soil samples were analyzed by SMC Laboratory, a state certified
laboratory, for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH) as gasoline by
the California DOHS LUFT Method/EPA Method 5030, and for the fuel
constituents volatile aromatics benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and
total xylenes (BTEX) by EPA Method 8020.
The laboratory analysis indicated that concentrations of TPH as
gasoline andBTEX were not detected in any of the samples submitted
for analysis. The laboratory reports and Chain-of-Custody are
included as Appendix B.
5.0 Conclusions
Based upon the chemical analytical results and field observations,
it appears that the removal of gasoline impacted soil was
successful and complete. Further, the bioremediation of gasoline
impacted soil was also successful and will meet the closure
requirements for the City of Bakersfield Hazardous Materials
Division.
6.0 Recommendations
AquaGeosciences, Inc. recommends that the treated soil be either
made available to the current owner for use as backfill or
transported to a Class III landfill. Finally, no further remedial
action is deemed necessary at this site.
