A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF BAKERSFIELD SUPPORTING PRO-
DEMOCRACY EFFORTS IN THE CITY OF
BEIJING, PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF
CHINA.
WHEREAS, pro-democracy demonstrators in the City of Beijing,
People's Republic of China, took to the parks and streets in
peaceful demonstrations; and
WHEREAS, these demonstrations were violently repressed by an
unresponsive government; and
WHEREAS, individuals who participated in the demonstrations
have died or have been sentenced to die because of their
participation, and
WHEREAS, students from both California State University,
Bakersfield and Bakersfield College have demonstrated their
concern over the welfare of the citizens of Beijing, and
WHEREAS, citizens in Bakersfield have cultural and familial
ties to citizens in Beijing; and
WHEREAS, the citizens in the City of Bakersfield believe in
the inherent human rights which are the inner core of the
democratic principles of government, including freedom of speech,
press and assembly; and
WHEREAS, Bakersfield is dedicated to democratic ideals and
to the right to exercise freedom of expression.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of
Bakersfield that the City Council and citizens of the City of
Bakersfield support the-democracy efforts of demonstrators in the
City of Beijing call upon the government of the People's Republic
of China 1) to pardon those condemned to death for their peaceful
participation in the protest and 2) to engage in meaningful
dialogue with those of its citizens who represent the desire of
all people to be free from tyranny and oppression.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed
and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a
regular meeting thereof held on June 28~ 1989 , by the
following vote:
