The purpose of the investigation was to monitor the removal of an underground storage tank (UST) and to determine whether the soil beneath the tank and dispenser island had been contaminated with gasoline. A summary of the procedures, the physical and chemical results and my findings are presented in the following sections. Figures and appendices are attached. BACKGROUND The subject site is located at 2830 Union Avenue in the city of Bakersfield, California on the southeast corner of Union Avenue and Pacific Street (Figure 1) . A 550 gallon UST and dispenser island was installed in the parking area adjacent to the south side of the building in October, 1983 (Figure 2). In November, 1995 the Bakersfield Fire Department, Office of Environmental Services requested the removal or repair of the UST. In response to this directive, the UST and associated dispenser was removed and disposed of on November 1, 1996. EXCAVATION AND SOIL SAMPLING The 550 gallon underground storage tank, dispenser island and attached product lines were excavated and removed by Don Crider Construction Inc. using a Caterpillar 416B backhoe. Prior to removal of the tank, the lower explosive limit was measured by a representative of the Bakersfield Fire Department, Office of Environmental Services and certified to be less than 5% (actual reading was zero %). A Certification Statement of Tank Decontamination is included in Appendix A. Approximately 15 pounds of dry ice was then inserted into the tank. A receipt for the dry . . The tank was removed and four soil samples were collected at 2 feet and 6 feet from beneath the center of both the tank and the dispenser island. Soil samples were collected in 8 ounce glass jars provided by Weck Laboratories Inc.. The samples were labeled, logged onto a chain-of-custody form, and placed in an ice chest for -shipment to Weck Laboratories Inc., an independent state-certified laboratory, for analysis. A lithologic description of the soil samples using the Unified Soil Classification System is included in Appendix A. No ground-water was encountered in the excavation. The tank was inspected prior to disposal and two small holes (1/4 inch and 3/4 inch) had corroded in the top of the tank. No holes were found in the sides or bottom of the tank. The tank removal and soil sampling were observed by a representative of the Bakersfield Fire Department. The removed tank was marked in paint with the permit number, BR-0166, then hauled to Golden state metals Inc. to be scrapped. A copy of the Certificate of Tank Disposal/Destruction is included in Appendix B. The tank excavation was backfilled with the soil from the excavation and clean fill, supplied by Don· Crider Construction Inc., then wheel compacted with the backhoe. FINDINGS All four soil samples were analyzed by Weck Laboratories Inc., an independent, state-certified analytical laboratory located in Industry, California. The soil samples were analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) using EPA Method 8015 for gasoline, for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and total xylenes (BTEX) using EPA Method 8020, and for lead using EPA Method 7420. A copy of the Chain-of-custody document is included in Appendix B. Results of the chemical analysis indicated TPH and BTEX were not detected in the soil samples collected from beneath the tank or from beneath the dispenser island. Lead was not detected in sample # 1 at 2 feet below the tank. Low levels of lead were detected at concentrations of 4.51 mg/Kg in sample #2 from 6 feet below the tank, 2.07 mg/Kg in sample #3 and 1.28 mg/Kg in sample #4 from 2 feet and 6 feet respectively, from below the dispenser island. Results of analysis for TPH, BTEX, and lead are included in Appendix B. CONCLUSIONS Visual inspection and laboratory analysis of the soil beneath the former UST and accompanying dispenser island indicate that there was no leakage of gasoline into the soil. The low levels of lead in three of the soil samples indicate a probable natural occurrence in the native soils. . .
