SITE ASSESSMENT REPORT
FORMER TEXACO SERVICE STATION
2601 WBITE LANE at EL PORTRERO LANE
BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA
November 20, 2002
1.0 INTRODUCTION
The property is a fonner Texaco Service Station. It is located on the southwest comer of the
intersection of White Lane and EI Portrero Lane in Bakersfield, California (Figure 1).
The need for additional assessment was outlined in a letter from the City of Bakersfield Fire
Department Environmental Services dated May 29, 2002, The purpose of the assessment is to more
fully define the vertical and lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbons beneath the # 1 dispenser and
#3 UST areas detected during the UST removal activities. This report documents the assessment
activities conducted on October 17 and 18,2002 at the subject property.
2.0 SITE SETTING
The site is located in a commercial district of Bakersfield. White Lane followed by a Shell service
station are located to the north; El Portrero Lane followed by a Chevron service station are located to
the east; A Motel 6 parking lot is directly adjacent to the south; A McDonald's is directly adjacent to
the west of the subject property
The fonner station consisted of a service station building, four dispenser islands each equipped with
one multi-product dispenser pump, four 10,000 gallon fiberglass gasoline underground storage tanks
(USTs), and associated piping (Figure 2).
3.0 SITE HISTORY
In December 1999, Artemis conducted a Phase I ESA at the subject site to detennine whether any
current or past uses hazardous materials resulted in impacted site soils and/or groundwater.

According to the ESA report, a site assessment investigation was conducted at the site in 1985. IT
Corporation drilled one soil boring and installed four monitoring wells on the site. Analytical results
of soil samples indicated no detectable concentrations of petroleum hydrocarbons were found
Based on a review of the project results, the County of Kern sent a letter to Texaco in December
1985 stating that no significant soil impact had resulted from fuel tank leakage and that the case was
considered closed (Artemis, 1999).
As part of the ES~ Artemis searched several databases containing information regarding leaking
tanks, Superfund sites, hazardous waste generation and handling, etc. Neither the subject site nor the
surrounding properties were included in the databases with the exception of five sites with state-
registered UST's and two sites identified as small quantity generators. No active Leaking
Underground Storage Tank (LUST) cases were identified.
Activities related to a site divestment. by Shell Oil Products US included the removal of the
tanks, product lines and dispensers on March 4, 2002. Soil sampling was performed by WGR
Southwest, Inc, beneath the inverts of each tank and beneath each dispenser island, Analysis of
soil samples indicated the presence of hydrocarbon-impacted soil at various depths. A TPH-d
concentration of 170 mglkg and a TPH-g concentration of9.1 mglkg were detected in sample D-
1 at 6 feet below surface grade (bgs). MTBE concentrations of 26 µglkg and 13 µglkg were
detected in sample 3A at 15 feet and 19 feet, respectively, MTBE concentrations of 68 µglkg
and 130 µglkg were detected in sample 3B at 15 feet and 19 feet, respectively, A remedial
excavation of the #3 UST area was performed and delineation sampling was conducted on
March 11, 2002. Soil samples were collected at 23 feet bgs. An MTBE concentration of 23
µglkg was detected in sample 3BB collected at the bottom of the excavation.
4.0 REGIONAL AND LOCAL HYDROGEOLOGIC SETTING
The geologic conditions in the site vicinity are characterized by alluvial deposits underlain by marine
and non-marine sedimentary units, metamorphic rocks, and crystalline basement material. Surface
and near-surface soil is designated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) as older alluvium,
deposited in northwest-dipping alluvial fans resulting from outwash from the Sierra Nevada
mountain range to the east. This alluvium is composed primarily of poorly-graded and
unconsolidated sands, sandy gravels, and occasional discontinuous lenticular bodies of sandy clay
and silt. Regionally, the surface of these old alluvial fans is undulatory, with a distinct dip toward the

Kern River to the northwest of the site. The site itself is located along one of the crests of the alluvial
fan surface 'ripples', at an elevation of approximately 393 feet above mean sea level (MSL). The
total thickness of the alluvial fan deposits is estimated to range from approximately 600 feet west of
the site to over 4,000 feet near the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
The site lies within the Edison hydrogeologic sub-area of the Edison-Maricopa area. Uppermost
groundwater within this area occurs within the old alluvial fan deposits. In the site vicinity,
deeper aquifers of limited areal extent are present in the consolidated non-marine sedimentary
units and within fracture zones of the crystalline basement rock According to the County of
Kern Health Department, the depth to groundwater near the subject site is approximately 250
feet bgs with a local flow direction toward the northwest. The most prominent subsurface
features controlling the groundwater flow direction are the groundwater barriers formed by the
northwest-to-southeast trending Edison fault and subparallel splays of this fault, located south
and north of the site, respectively.
5.0 FIELD ACTIVITIES
5.1 DRILLING AND SAMPLING PROCEDURES
Six soil borings, (B-5 through B-I0) were drilled and sampled on October 17 and 18,2002 at the
subject property to more fully define the vertical and lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbons
beneath the site, Boring locations are shown in Figure 2. Borings B-5 through B-7, adjacent to the
dispenser island, were drilled vertically to depths of approximately 20 feet bgs. Borings B-8 through
B-I0, drilled within or adjacent to the former UST area, were drilled vertically to depths of
approximately 40 feet bgs,
During this investigation standard practices and procedures for field sampling as outlined in
Publication SW-846, Second Edition, United States Environmental Protection Agency and any local
agency mandated sampling procedures were followed. A limited access hollow stem auger drilling
rig was utilized for the advancement of soil borings B-5 through B-I0. Pre-cleaned and/or steam
cleaned augers were used throughout the drilling operation to prevent potential cross contamination,
Undisturbed soil samples were collected for analyses and lithologic characterization at approximate
five-foot depth intervals from soil borings B-5 through B-lO. The soil samples submitted for

analyses were collected in an 24-inch long, 2.0-inch 0. D. split-spoon sampler lined with 1.5 inch 0.
D, stainless steel tubes. The sleeves were sealed at each end with Teflon1M -lined end caps. The
samples were labeled with all pertinent sampling infonnation, and then packed on ice for subsequent
transport to a California Department of Health Services (CDHS)-certified laboratory for analyses.
The soil in the remaining tubes was screened for hydrocarbon vapors with a portable organic vapor
analyzer (OVA), described and logged by the field geologist in accordance with the Unified Soil
Classification System (USCS). All sampling equipment was decontaminated between sampling
episodes utilizing a triple rinse method consisting of a wash with Alconox (or equivalent) solution,
an initial rinse with tap water, and a final rinse with deionized water. Immediately following
sampling, all borings were backfilled with bentonite grout. All borings were completed at surface
with concrete to match the existing surface, Chain of custody protocol was followed throughout
field and laboratory procedures,
5.2 HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAN
A site specific Health and Safety Plan detailing all known or potential hazards and emergency
response procedures was prepared prior to field operations. All on-site personnel reviewed the
plan and a "tailgate" safety meeting was conducted prior to initiation of field activities, The
plan was maintained on-site throughout the duration of field activities.
5.3 DRILL SITE CLEARANCE
Prior to the initiation of field operations, drilling locations were marked with white paint and
Underground Service Alert (USA) was contacted to identify any potential subsurface
obstructions and/or conflicts, In order to further insure that no underground utilities or
obstructions existed at the proposed boring locations a geophysical survey was conducted at the
property prior to conducting the filed investigation. Additionally, the initial 5 feet of drilling
was advanced utilizing hand auger techniques.
5.4 LABORATORY ANALYSES
Soil samples collected from borings adjacent to the gasoline dispenser islands and/or fuel storage
tanks were submitted to a State certified laboratory for analysis by EP A Method 8260B for TPH-g,
TPH-d, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and total xylenes (B1EX), and MTBE.

6.0 RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION
Sediments encountered during the drilling investigation are summarized generally as follows: poorly
graded fine grained sands and well graded fine to coarse grained sands to 40 feet bgs and a sandy
clay layer after 40 feet bgs. Boring logs are attached as Appendix A.
TPH-d concentrations were reported in boring B-5 with a concentration of 56 mglkg at 5 feet bgs and
in boring B-9 with a concentration of37 mglkg at 20 feet bgs.
Analytical results of the soil samples indicated no detectable TPH-g, BTEX, MTBE, or oxygenate
concentrations in any of the boring locations. Analytical results for TPHg, BTEX, and MTBE
concentrations are summarized in Table 1. Laboratory reports and chain of custody documents are

The drill cuttings generated. during the field investigation were stored temporarily on site in 55-gallon
DOT -approved steel drums pending characterization. Each drum was labeled with the site name and
address, generation date, and type and source of the material it contains. Following characterization,
the drums will be transported to an appropriate facility for disposal. Copies of disposal
documentation will be forwarded upon receipt
8.0 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
Six soil borings were advanced and sampled at the subject site on October 17 and 18, 2002 to more
fully defme the vertical and lateral extent of petroleum hydrocarbons beneath the # 1 dispenser and
#3 UST areas detected during the UST removal activities.
Sediments encountered during the drilling investigation consisted of poorly graded fine grained
sands and well graded fine to coarse grained sands to 40 feet bgs and a sandy clay layer after 40 feet
bgs.
Two detectable TPH-d concentrations were identified in borings B-5 and B-9 with concentration of
56 mglkg and 37 mglkg respectively.
