The corporation has no assets at this time nor does it see any in the near fut~re. Also due to a personal bankruptcy of corporate officers cash is at a minimum. For those that we have been doing business over the past ---- ---few~years we--,sincerely regret this situation, and the discom- fort it is causing you. It is unfortunate that these things are forc~d upon us in this way, however it was a series ofLthis and thefts as well as incredible insurance and tax rates that finally forced our demise. For those of you that need to contact us the mailing is .. Miracl,e Auto Painting And Body Repair P.O. HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES USED IN YOUR WORKPLACE In our shop we use a variety of products. Most of these products contain ·one or more hazardous substances. Let's review the HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE IN VENTOR Y LIST in your work area. .~ READING LABELS AND MSDS LABELS: A product label on both the original and se,condary containers should be reviewed prior to working with the material. The label shoUld act as a visual reminder of the information we have presented in this training session and of the information found in more deta:il on the HSDS. - It is essential. for your safety that you read the Hazard Warning and omy use the Hazardous Substance(s) within the guidelines prescribed on the label. Questions concerning the label shoUld be directed to your supervisor/foreman. MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEETS (11505) The "50S is the pcimary means we will use to convey the necessary information about the hazards of the substances we use. The manufacturers and importers are responsible for providing us with the "SDS. The manufacturer must provide us with adequate information to use the substance safely. If you use any other products than Nason or Hi-Glo you must obtain MSDS forms for these products. The specific it.ems are reviewed in your SUMMARY OF CALIFORNIA'S HAZARD COMMUNICATION REGULATION. -' PLEASE NOTE that there are many commercially available training programs which wm. describe how to read Labels. Material Safety Data Sheets, etc. . PHYSICAL' AND HEALTH HAZARDS OF THE HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE(S) USED Employees are to be trained specificaUy about the hazards of the substances in their work areas. This may be done by specific Hazardous Substances or by categories of hazards, but in any case, the employee is to be aware that information is available on the specific hazards of individual Hazardous Substances through MSDSs. 1. Measures to protect employee from the hazards ü.e., work practices, engi- neering controls and the use of personal. protective equipment). 2. Even higher levels may cause unconsciousness and may have other brain and central nervous system effects. tTolonged or repeated liquid contact with the skin may cause defatting of the skin, leading to dryness, possible irritation and dennatitis (reddening and i.nf1.amed skin). Some solvents are absorbed right through the skin and the he8lt.h effects are just as if the solvent vapor was inhaled. Each organic solvent's long term possible health effects will. vary; however, pro- longed solvent exposures are related to possible liver, kidney and central nervous system and brain damage. (NOTE: THE V ARIETY OF SOLVENT TYPES SHOULD BE REVIE WED.) PHYSICAL HAZARDS: Organic solvents are flammable and combustible and repre- sent fire and explosion hazards if the materia1s are not han<:D.ed cOITectly. Hydrocarbon solvents are generaUy stable and will not react violently with water. Review the MSDS sections on Fire and Explosion Hazard information. Most sol- vents will vaporize ~apidl.y and become airborne. DETEcnON OF RELEASE: 0 DOR - Solvent vapor may produce an odor or cause your nose or eyes to be i.rr:i.tated, but dontt depend on odor to warn you. Odor thresholds (lowest level that can be detected) for most solvents vary widely from person to person. Also, some solvents produce "olfactory fatigue" - the rapid loss of ability to smell the odor. However, odor can warn you of exposure to some solvents (confirm this with industrial hygiene monitoring). Appearance - Most solvent v.apors are invisible so don't rely on appearance to warn you for exposure. Instrumentation - A variety of industrial hygiene instruments can be used to mea- sure employee exposure. This equipment should be operated only by qualified per- sonnel. EMERGENCY RESPONSE: FOR FLAKIIABLE SO,LVENTS - If the material is spiJled or leaks, shut C£f and e1iminate aU sources of ignition. Recover the free product by adding sand, earth or other absorbents to the spill. Minimize breathing vapors and skin contact. Vent:ilate the area with local exhaust or by opening win- dows and doors. Follow the hazardous waste disposal procedures we have estab- lished. EXPOSURE CONTROL - Protective Equipment, Engineering Controls and Proper Work Practices: -- PROTECnVE EQUIPMENT: Use chemical-resistant gloves, apronS or clothing if prolonged or repeated skin contact may occur. Use splash goggles and face shield when eye or face contact may occur. Use approved respiratory pro- tective equipment as established by our Safety Program (N OTE: if needed, a review of the respiratory protective program may be appropriate). 3 . . SECTION IV-HEALTH HAZARD DATA .eShold Limit Value:, ' The ACGIH recommended general limit for Welding Fume NOC - (Not Otherwise Classified) is 5 mglm'. ACGIH.1985 preface states "The TLV-TWA should be used as guides in the control of heaith hazards and should not be used as fine lines between sale and dangerous concentrations." See Section V for specific fume constituents which may modify this TLV, Threshold Limit Values are figures published, by the American Conference of Government Industrial Hygienists, Units may be milligrams per cubic meter (mg'm'), millIOns of particles per cubic foot of air (mppcf), 'or parts per million of vapor or gas in air (ppm), (Section IV continued on side two.) Emergency and First Aid Procedures: Call for medical aid, Employ first aid techniques recommended by the American Red Cross, IF BREATHING IS DIFFICULT give oxygen. IF NOT BREATHING employ CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) techniques, IN CASE OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK, tum off power and follow recommended treatment. In all cases call a physician. SECTION V - REACTIVITY DATA Hazardous Decomposition Products Welding fumes and gases cannot be classified simply. The composition and quantity of both are dependent upon the metal being welded. the process, procedure and electrodes used. Other conditions which also influence the composition and quantity of the fumes and gases to which workers may be exposed include: coatings on the metal being welded (such as paint, plating, or galvanizing), the number of welders and the volume of the work area, the quality and amount of ventilation, the position Of the welder's head with respect to the fume plume, as well as the presence of contaminants in the atmosphere (suc~ as chlorinated hydrocarbon vapors from cleaning and degreasing activities). When the electrode is consumed, the fume and gas decomposition products generated are different in percent and form from the ingredients listed in Section II, Decomposition products of normal operation include those originating from the volatilization, reaction, or oxidation of the materials shown in Section II, plus those from the base metal and coating, etc., as noted above. Reasonabtyexpected fume constituents of this product would include: Primarf1y iron oxide; secondarf1y comp1ex oxides of manganese, _ silicon, sodium and titanium. ~ Maximum fume exposure guideline for this product is 5.0 mg/m3. Gaseous reaction products may include carbon monoxide' and carbon dioxide, Ozone and nitrogen oxides may be formed by the radiation from the arc. One recommended way to determine the composition and quantity of fumes and gases to which workers are exposed is to take an air sample from inside the welder's helmet if worn or in the worker's breathing zone, See ANSI/AWS F1.1 "Method for Sampling Airborne Particles Generated by Welding and Allied Processes," available from the American Welding Society. 550 N.w. SECTION VI AND VII - CONTROL MEASURES AND PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLtNG AND USE Read and understand the manufacturer's instructions and the precautionary label on the product. See American National Standard Z49.1, "Safety In Welding and Cutting" published by the American Welding Society, 550 N.w. LeJeune Road, Miami. Florida, 33126 and OSHA Publication 2206 (29CFR 191 0), U.S, Government Printing Office, Washington, D,C. 20402 for more detail on many of the following: Ventilation Use enough ventilation, local exhaust at the arc. or both. 10 keep the fumes and gases from the worker's breathing zone and the general area, Train the welder to keep his head out of the fumes. Respiratory Protection Use respirable fume respirator or air supplied respirator when welding in confined space or general work area when local exhaust or ventilation does not keep exposure below TL V. Eye Protection Wear helmet or use face shield with filter lens shade number 12 or darker. Shield others by providing screens and flash goggles, Protective Clothing ~ _ Wear hand, head, and body protection which help to prevent injury from radiation, sparks. and electrical shock, See Z49,1. At a minimum ~ this includes welder's gloves and a protective face shield, and may include arm protectors, aprons, hats, shoulder protection, as well as dark substantial clothing, Train the welder not to permit electrically live parts or electrodes to contact skin. . . or clothing or gloves if they are wet, Insulate from work and ground.
