TIME WEIGHTED AVERAGE EXPOSURE UMlT None established (ACGUI, 1989·90). Oxygen is the "vital element" in the atmosphere in which we live and. breathe (approximately 21 molar (volume) percent of the atmosphere). The minimum oxygen content in workplace air is 18% by volume under normal atDlospheric pressure, equivalent to a partial pressure, p02 of 135 torr, (ACGlH 1989-90), SVMPTOMS OF EXPOSURE The primary route of entry is inhalation. Acute health effects: Adults can satisfactorily breathe pure [;", ~ oxygen for extended periods at 0.33 at.m, or at 1 atm for several days at less than 5 hours a day. However, ,< .' irritation to mucous membranes may occur when 100% oxygen is inhaled continuously for several hours. Chest pains and cough can result from breathing O2 at 1 atm for B to 24 hours or 2 atm fOT 2 to 3 hours or from an atmosphere of 60% oxygen for several days. Breathing high concentrations greater than 75 (molar) percent by volume at atmospheric pressure for more than a few hours causes symptoms of hyperoxia (high oxygen exposure) with a variety of central nervous system effects. These symptoms include cramps, nausea, dizziness, hypothermia (low body temperature), ambylopia (rliminished vision), nasal stuffiness, cough, sore throat, chest I>ain.,.respiratory difficulties, bradycardia (slow heart rate), fainting spells, and convulsions capable ofleaaing to death. Breathing oxygen at higher pressures increases the likelihood of adverse effects within a shorter time period. For additional data. on hyperoxia, (high oxygen exposure) as it relates to oxygen pressure and exposure duration, refer to L'Air Liquide's Encyclopedie des Gaz (See References on last page). Prolonged breathing of very cold atmospheres can cause lung dam~ and hypothennia (low body temperature). Chronic health effects: None established. Medical conditions generally aggravated by exposure: See NOTES TO PHYSICIAN, below. NOTES TO PHYSICIAN: fI"'or gaseous exposure, supportive treatment should include immediate sedation, anti-convulsive therapy uneeded. and rest. Animal studies suggest that the administration of certain drugs, including phenothiazine drugs and chloroquine, increases the susceptibility to toxicity trom oxygen at high concentrations or pressures. Animal studies also indicate that vitamin ~ deficiency may increase susceptibility to oxygen toxicity. Airway obstruction during high oxy-gen tension may cause alveolar collapse following absorption of the oxygen_ Similarly, occlusion of the eustachian tubes may cause retraction of the eardrum and obstruction of the paranasal sinuses may produce "vacuum-type" headache. Newborn premature infants exposed to high oxygen concentrations may suffer delayed retinal damage which can progress to retinal detachment and blindness (retrolental fibroplasia). Retinal damage can also occur in aaults exposed to 100% oxygen under greater than atmospheric pressure, particularly in individuals whose retinal circulation has been previously compromised. All individuals exposed for long periods to, oxygen at high pressure and all who exhibit overt oxygen toxicity should have ophthalmologic examinations. Contact with the cryogenic liquid or cold piping containing the liquid can cause tissue freezing or frostbite on dermal contact or if splashed in the eyes, JUdgemerm; iI& 10 IlIe sui1abililv ollnlormBlion lIetein far pun:ha&er's putpD~ are I1ØC8$SIfily purcftuer's ~OII$Ibilily. However, at elevated concentrations and pressures, ~en may cawse adverse effect5 ofbyperoxia (high oxygen exposure) which leads to pnemnonia. Concentrations between 25 and 75 molar percent present a risk of inflammation of or~c matter in the body. RECOMMENDED FIRST AID TREATMENT PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IS MANDATORY IN ALL CASES OF OVEREXPOSURE TO OXYGEN_ RESCUE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE AWARE OF EXTREME FIRE HAZARD ASSOCIATED WITH OXYGEN-RICHATMOSPBERES. REDUCE OXYGENPREBSURES TO 1 ATMOSPHERE AND/OR MOVE VICTIM INTO FRESH AIR. Conscious persons should be assiSted to an uncontaminated area and breathe fresh air. They should be ~ warm and quiet. The physician sbould be informed. that the victim is experiencing (has e2C.perienced) h) p& wua (high OXYgÐn exposure). Unconscious persons should be moved 1.0 an uncunt.::lm;nëJted area and given assisted respiration. When breathing has been restored, treatment should be as above. Continued treatment should be symptomatic and fiUpportive. For skin contact or frostbite, immerse affected areas in lukewarm water. DO NOT USE HOT WATER. Do not rub frozen area. For eye contact, ßush with lot..c; ofwann (tepid) water. For hypothermia (low body temperature), remove victim tu a warm (not hot) area. Remove contaminated clothing, ifpossíble. Wrap himlher in blankets. Slowly restore body temperature. A physican should see "he patient promptly in all cases. Valve protection caps ~ust remain in place unless container is secured with valve outlet piped to use point. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Use a pressure reducing regulator when removing gas from the cylinder. DO NOT ALLOW THE FREE GAS TO EXCEED 30 PSIA (207 kPa) @ 70°F (21.1°C). Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the cylinder. Use a check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous back flow into the cylinder. For additional handling recommendations consult L'Air Liquide's Encyclopedia de Gaz or Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet p.', SPECIAL STORAGE RECOMMENDATIONS ìtect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area of ~~,1-combustible construction away from heavily trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where cylinders are stored to exceed 130F (54C1. Cylinders must be stored upright and firmly secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Full and empty cylinders should De segregated. Use a IIfirst in-first outll inventory system to prevent full cyl inders being stored for excessive periods of time. Post "No Smoking or Open Flames" signs in the storage or use area. There should be no sources of ignition in the storage or use area. For addihonal storage recommendations consult L'Air Liquide's Encyclopedia de Gaz or Compressed Gas Associahon Pamphlet P-1. SPECIAL PACKAGING RECOMMENDATIONS Since acetylene will explode or combust if its pressure exceeds 30 psia (207 kpa) it is shipped dissolved in acetone or dimethyl formam ide which is dispersed in a porous mass within the cylinder. Follow Liquid Air Corporation's instructions for the maximum withdrawal rate for each size cylinder so that solvent is not withdra\~n with the acetylene. Most metals, except silver, copper, mercury or brasses~/ith more than 66% copper, are compatible (non corrosive) with acetylene. OTHER.8ECOMMENDATlONS OR PRECAUTIONS Earth-ground and bond all lines and equi~~ent associated with the acetylene system. Electrical equipment should be non-sparking or explosion proof. Compressed gas rylinders should not be refilled except bj qualified producers of compressed gases. .\-, lipment of a compressed gas .cyl ;~der vlh~ch has not been filled by the O\'/ner or vlith , nis (written) consent is a vlolatlon of ~~deral Law (49CFR).
