A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD SUPPORTING RETENTION OF RAIL
SERVICE ON THE SUNSET RAILWAY COMPANY LINE
FROM BAKERSFIELD TO TAFT AND MARICOPA.
WHEREAS, Sunset Railway Company has caused to be pub-
lished a public notice indicating its intent to initiate abandon-
ment proceedings with respect to the Sunset Railway line; and
WHEREAS, the service provided by this line has had a sig-
nificant impact on the surrounding communities and the businesses
served and this line functions as one of the cornerstones of the
transportation linkage necessary for the economy of the cities of
Taft and Maricopa and their continued economic development; and
WHEREAS, this line provides needed service to a number of
rail-dependent companies located along the lines in the Taft and
Maricopa area and will seriously impact their ability to continue
in operation; and
WHEREAS, where businesses are adversely affected by the
loss of rail service there will be a resulting loss of many jobs;
and
WHEREAS, the abandonment of this line will have a
serious, detrimental impact on community businesses and the
zens who depend on those businesses.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
of Bakersfield as follows:
1. That the facts recited hereinabove are true.
2. That this Council hereby finds and determines
that the present and future convenience and necessity of
the citizens will not be served by the proposed abandon-
ment of Sunset Railway's lines between Taft and Bakers-
field and that such abandonment will have a serious,
adverse impact on economic development.
3. That because of the detrimental impact abandon-
ment will have on the businesses and communities served by
this line, this Council is opposed to the proposed
abandonment and urges the Interstate Commerce Commission
to deny the application for abandonment of Sunset
Railway's lines between Bakersfield and Taft.
