A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD DECLARING MAY 18, 1988 AIR
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT DAY FOR EMPLOYEES
WORKING ALONG CALIFORNIA AVENUE.
WHEREAS, vehicles are the major source of carbon monoxide
production and a contributing source of ozone; and
WHEREAS, the Environmental Protection Agency states
Bakersfield and Kern County rank 17th in the nation in terms of
concentration of ozone, the major ingredient of smog; and
WHEREAS, California Avenue has the highest traffic volume
of any urbanized Bakersfield corridor; and
WHEREAS, Kern County has more cars per capita than any
other California county;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED, by the Council of
the City of Bakersfield that it recognizes the efforts made by
employees working along the California Avenue corridor to improve
air quality:
A. By acknowledging the following companies for pro-
viding company time to host air quality presentations: Chevron
U.S.A. Inc., Contel, Mobil Oil Corporation, Occidental
International Exploration and Production Company, Santa Fe Energy
Company, and Shell Western Exploration and Production Inc.; and
B. By acknowledging the following companies for provid-
ing information regarding alternate forms of transportation to
employees: ARCO Oil and Gas, E1 Torito and Klein Wegis and
Duggan; and
C. By thanking all California Avenue businesses who
encouraged employees to consider alternate forms of transportation
in the interest of air quality when commuting to work.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Bakersfield City Council
declares Wednesday, May 18, 1988, AIR QUALITY IMPROVEMENT DAY FOR
EMPLOYEES WORKING ALONG CALIFORNIA AVENUE and encourages all
employers and the citizens of Kern County to continue to consider
alternate forms of transportation as a measure to improve the
quality of air in Bakersfield and Kern County.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was
passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a
regular meeting thereof held on May 11, 1988 , by
the following vote:
