CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:

Under general direction, performs administrative and supervisory
work in organizing and directing the maintenance of streets, and of
sanitary and storm drain systems, including the responsibility for
planning, organizing and exercising general supervision over the work
of a large group of employees engaged in the streets division of the
Public Works Department; and performs other work as required.

DESIRABLE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Graduation from a recognized college with a
degree in civil engineer ng and five years of progressively responsi-
ble experience in genera public works operations and administration,
including street construction and maintenance; or an equivalent combi-
nation of training and experience which provides the capabilities to
perform the described duties.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Comprehensive knowledge of the prin-
ciples and practices of civil engineering. Comprehensive knowledge of
the principles and practices of public works construction and mainte-
nance as applied to the construction, maintenance, and repair of
streets, storm drainage, and sanitary sewer facilities. Ability to
plan, assign, and supervise the operations of a large public works
division; ability to plan and coordinate long-range programs, estimate
costs, and requirements accurately, and draw up budgets; ability to
establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees
and the public.
