A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD SUPPORTING CONSTRUCTION AND OPERATION
OF A FEDERAL PRISON IN THE GREATER TAFT AREA.
WHEREAS, the Taft District Chamber of Commerce has
engaged in an effort to attract a Federal Prison facility to the
greater Taft area; and
WHEREAS, s~ch a facility would house approximately
600-800 minimum to medium security prisoners at a proposed site
located approximately 8 miles northwest of the City of Taft; and
WHEREAS, tlhe Chamber of Commerce estimates that such a
facility would produce between 40 and 50 million dollars worth of
construction activity, employ approximately 250 full time
employees, have an annual operating budget of 12 million dollars
and add much needed diversity to the economy of western Kern
County; and
WHEREAS, among the agencies and individuals supporting
the effort to encourage a Federal Prison facility to locate in
the Taft area are: the City Council of the City of Taft, City
Council of the City of Maricopa, City of Shafter, West Side Water
District Board, Taft College Board, Assemblyman Harvey,
Congressman Thomas, Senator Rogers and Supervisor Hettinger; and
WHEREAS, Wayne L. Deats, Jr., Mayor of the City of Taft,
seeks the support of the City Council of the City of Bakersfield
for the siting of a Federal Prison in the Taft area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Bakersfield hereby declares its support of the
efforts of the Taft District Chamber of Commerce and the City
Council of the City of Taft to secure the siting of a Federal
Prison facility in the Greater Taft area.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City
of Bakersfield shall forward copies of this Resolution to the
following:
Congressman Thomas
Senator Rogers
Assemblyman Harvey
City Council of the City of Taft
City Council of the City of ~aricopa
Taft District Chamber of Commerce
Councy Administrative Officer
County Counsel

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Ordinance was passed
and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular
