RESOLUTION NO.
A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING QUERETARO, MEXICO,
A SISTER CITY OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD.
WHEREAS, in July, 2003, Mayor Harvey L. Hall contacted then Mayor Dr.
Rolando Garcia, of Queretaro, Mexico, seeking a Sister City relationship; and
WHEREAS, in November, 2003, the newly-elected Mayor of Queretaro,
Armando Rivera, contacted Mayor Hall and expressed interest in establishing an official
relationship with Bakersfield as a Sister City; and
WHEREAS, in May, 2004, Mayor Rivera invited Mayor Hall to Queretaro to
celebrate their annual Festival; and
WHEREAS, in July, 2004, Manuel Arriola, Chairman of the Bakersfield/Queretaro
Committee visited Queretaro on behalf of the Bakersfield Sister City Project
Corporation; and
WHEREAS, in December of 2004, Mayor Hall and Frank Tripicchio, President of
Bakersfield Sister City Project Corporation, along with several members of the
Bakersfield Queretaro Committee, visited Queretaro; and
WHEREAS, during these visits, officials from both cities and the Bakersfield
Sister City Project Corporation expressed a desire to establish a sister city relationship
between Bakersfield and Queretaro; and
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program is recognized worldwide and is designed to
promote mutual understanding and good will by an exchange of ideas, materials and
visits; and
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program has as its aim the bridging of cultural
differences that divide people, the removal of misunderstandings that hinder the
peaceful exchange of ideas and customs, and the building of a lasting peace that
strengthens individual freedom and cooperation in a wide variety of social, economic
and political relationships.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Bakersfield does hereby
resolve that the City of Queretaro, Mexico, be designated as a Sister City to the City of
Bakersfield, authorizes the Mayor of Bakersfield sign all documents to implement the
Sister City relationship, and that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to the Mayor of
Queretaro.
