AN ORDINANCE REGULATING VACATIONS, SICK LEAVE
TIME, AND OTHER LEAVES OF ABSENCE FOR OFFICERS
AND EMPLOYEES OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD.
BE IT 0RDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD,
as follows:
Section 1.
Except as otherwise provided by the Charter of the City of
Bakersfield every person who shall have been in the service of the
City of Bakersfield continuously for at least one year shall be
allowed an annual vacation of twelve worEing days on full pay. In
computing vacations every Saturday included shall be considered one-
half working day. Annual vacations shall be taken during each
calendar year and shall not be cumulative except when specifically
allowed by the head of the department in which the person serves,
and approved by the City Council. All vacations shall be taken at
such time as shall be designated by the head of the department in
which the person entitled thereto is employed.
Section 2.
Every person, except members of the Fire Department, who
has held a permanent position in the service of the City of Bakers-
field for one year or more immediately. preceding any illness or
injury, and is compelled to be absent from duty on account of such
illness or injury, other than injury arisi~ out of or in the course
of his employment (which is otherwise provided for) shall receive
full compensation for the time lost on account of said illness or
injury, at the rate of one day for each month of continuous service.
Such sick leave shall be Cumulative, but in no case shall sick or
injury leave be cumulated to exceed..forty--eight working days on full
pay.
Every person entitled to sick leave shall be credited with
twelve working days, less thB number of days he has been off on
account of illness in the twelve months preceding the taki~ effect
of this ordinance. In computing sick leave time each Saturday
included shall be considered one-half working day.
Section 3.
Every member of the Fire Department of the City of Bakers-
field who has held a permanent position therein for one year or more
immediately preceding any illness or injury, and is compelled to be
absent from duty on account of such illness or injury, other than
injury arising out of or in the course of his.employment (which is
otherwise provided for), shall receive full compensation for the
time lost on account of such illness or injury, to the extent of
seven working shifts per year. Such sick leave shall be cumulative,
but in no case shall sick or injury leave be cumulated to exceed
twenty-eight working shifts.
Each member of the Fire Department shall be credited with
seven working shifts, less the number of working shifts he has been
off on sick leave within the twelve months immediately preceding
the taking effect of this ordinance.
Section 4.
The Council may, in its discretion, upon due cause shown,
give leaves of absence other than provided for heroin, with or
without pay.
Section ~.
Immediately upon the taking effect of this ordinance, the
head of each department shall make a report to the City Auditor
showing the number of days sick leave on pay that each officer or
employee in his department has lost on account of sickness, other
than sickness directly arising out of his employment, within the
twelve months immediately preceding the taking e~fect of this ordin-
ance; and thereafter the head of each department shall furnish a
report to the City Auditor on the last working day of each month,

showing all time lost for whatever cause by persons in his depart-
ment during said month. Such report shall contain all information
which, in the opinion of the City Auditor, shall be deemed necessary.
The City Auditor shall prepare and furnish the head of each depart-
ment with forms for such reports.
