AN EMERGENCY ·ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA, ·ORDERING,
CALLING, PROCLAIMING, PROVIDING FOR
AND GIVING NOTICE· OF TWO. SPECIAL '·
ELECTIONS TO BE HELD IN SAID CITY ON
TUESDAY, MARCH 19,· 1957, ONE FOR. THE
PURPOSE OF SUBMITTING· TO THE QUALIFIED
VOTERS OF SAID CITY A PROPOSITION FOR THE
ADOPTION BY SAID CITY 0F·A PLAN FOR THE
ACQUISITION, CONSTRUCTION AND ·ESTABLISH-
MENT OF· A MUNICIPAL BUS SYSTEM, AND THE
OTHER FOR THE. PURPOSE· OF SUBMITTING TO
SAID· VOTERS· A PROPOSITION TO INCUR BONDED
INDEBTEDNESS BY SAID· CITY FOR THE
· MUNICIPAL IMPROVEMENT TO CARRY OUT SAID
PLAN AND CONSOLIDATING SAID ELECTIONS
WITH THE CITY NOMINATING ELECTION TO BE
· HELD' ON. SAID DATE.
".. '.o WHEREAS, by reason of the inability of the Bakers-·
· field Transit Co. to continue its Operation of·a Sransit
system in and around the City of Bakersfield,·this Cbuncil
did, on the 1st day of August,· 1956, take o~er and assume
· the operation and maintenance of .sa£d system in order to
Provid·~ adequate transportation·for the citizens of this
commUnity, f0r'a period of eigh~ months and·until such time
a~ the question of acquiring'and establishing·such·a'system
· of transportation by the·City could be submitted to the-
electors of. the City; and
· ~HEREAS, this Council desires to submit said Proposi-
tion to the 'electors of the City at a specialelection to

WHEREAS, an emergency therefore exi'sts and the
im~hediate preservation of th~ public health, peace, property
and safety make it imperative that the bond'election be held
.... before 'the termination of the present lease Contract. with the
.. Baker'Sfie'ld.Transit Co., to determine Whether the City Shall
.a.cquire ~nd continue to operate a transib system; and
. . WHEREAS, th~ Council'of the .City. of Bakersfield,
California, did on the 28th day of January, 1957, by a vote
of at 'least two-thirds Of the members of said Council, adopt

public ititerest"and necessity demand the .acquisition. and

the City of Bakersfield .as follows:

· buses', fare boxes, service equipment and vehicles,
off'ce'equipment and other appurtenant property
presently owned by the Bakersfield Transit c°.,
the acquisition of additional buses, fare boxes,
service equipment, automobiles, shop!t0ols,'radio
· . equipment, office equipmeht and other property
· necessary for said system, 'and th~ acquisition of
.. land and the construction thereon of.of'fices,
Shops, fuel station~ fuel tanks', .. and ·other buildings
aud structures necessary.for the operation of said

That th~ estimated cost or price thereof,.which is
the estimate-of the cost at which such public utility ca,.be
acqulred, a~d constructed), is 'the .sum. of $B95,000.
Section 2. .That a special-slect'~on be held, and
the'same iS. hereby ca~led to be'held, in the City of
Bakersfield,"California,-On the 19th'.daY .of March, 1957,
for.t~e purpose of..submitting, to the qualified registered

ness'and issuing bonds of said city therefor, in the amount

Section B. That the. object and' purpose for'which

Section ~.' That the estimated ·cost o~ t~e municipal

election a~d shall remain open continuously from said time

Section 6. A cross (+). placed in the voting square
afber the word "YES" in.the manner hereinbefore provided

after the Word "NO". in the manner hereinbefore provided·

Section 8.. That, except as otherwise provided

Section. lO. This ordinance shall constitute the

Section !1. The Cl'erk shall cause a copy of this

Section..12. This'ordinance is an emergency ordidance
