RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE ADDITION OF A FIFTH
DAILY ROUND TRIP TRAIN ON AMTRAK'S SAN JOAQUIN
CORRIDOR
WHEREAS, the current San Joaquin Corridor of the State supported
AMTRAK Passenger Train Service extends between Bakersfield and Oakland, with
connecting bus service to several other California communities, including Sacramento; and
WHEREAS, ridership on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor has steadily grown
since service started in 1974; and
WHEREAS, the Bakersfield AMTRAK Station is the busiest station insofar
as passenger activity on the San Joaquin Route; and
WHEREAS, the Bakersfield AMTRAK Station is the fifth busiest station
among all state-supported AMTRAK stations within California; and
WHEREAS, the current train schedules require a passenger to stay over
night if he/she is traveling between Bakersfield and Sacramento; and
WHEREAS, this limitation forces many business travelers from Bakersfield
to drive their own personal vehicles to Sacramento for a day trip to conduct business in the
State's capital; and
WHEREAS, Caltrans has proposed that service on AMTRAK's San Joaquin
Corridor be increased from four to six round-trip trains; and
WHEREAS, adding a fifth, daily round trip on AMTRAK's San Joaquin
Corridor has the potential to allow a business traveler to leave Bakersfield in the morning,
conduct his/her business in Sacramento that afternoon and return to Bakersfield that
evening; and
WHEREAS, this improvement to the operation of passenger trains on
AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor would most likely increase the total ridership levels on
that corridor; and
WHEREAS, increased ridership on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor
passenger trains would be good for the economy and the environment of the San Joaquin
Valley and the State; and
