HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 63-98RESOLUTION NO. {~ ~ - g 8 RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE ADDITION OF A FIFTH DAILY ROUND TRIP TRAIN ON AMTRAK'S SAN JOAQUIN CORRIDOR WHEREAS, the current San Joaquin Corridor of the State supported AMTRAK Passenger Train Service extends between Bakersfield and Oakland, with connecting bus service to several other California communities, including Sacramento; and WHEREAS, ridership on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor has steadily grown since service started in 1974; and WHEREAS, the Bakersfield AMTRAK Station is the busiest station insofar as passenger activity on the San Joaquin Route; and WHEREAS, the Bakersfield AMTRAK Station is the fifth busiest station among all state-supported AMTRAK stations within California; and WHEREAS, the current train schedules require a passenger to stay over night if he/she is traveling between Bakersfield and Sacramento; and WHEREAS, this limitation forces many business travelers from Bakersfield to drive their own personal vehicles to Sacramento for a day trip to conduct business in the State's capital; and WHEREAS, Caltrans has proposed that service on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor be increased from four to six round-trip trains; and WHEREAS, adding a fifth, daily round trip on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor has the potential to allow a business traveler to leave Bakersfield in the morning, conduct his/her business in Sacramento that afternoon and return to Bakersfield that evening; and WHEREAS, this improvement to the operation of passenger trains on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor would most likely increase the total ridership levels on that corridor; and WHEREAS, increased ridership on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor passenger trains would be good for the economy and the environment of the San Joaquin Valley and the State; and S:\PROJECTS~ARNOLD~AMTRAK STA\PRE-DSGN\RESOLUTION 4_22 gBwpd Page 1 of 2 Pages WHEREAS, the Governor of California has included money in the FY98-99 budget to operate an additional fifth daily round trip on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield, as follows: 1. The Council of the City of Bakersfield does by this Resolution show its support for the addition of a fifth daily round trip on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor. 2. The Council of the City of Bakersfield does by this Resolution request that the State Rail Program contine the planning for the fifth daily round trip on AMTRAK's San Joaquin Corridor and that this service be implemented as soon as possible.
