A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING BUCHEON CITY, REPUBLIC OF KOREA,
A SISTER CITY OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD.
WHEREAS, in March, 2005, representatives from Bucheon City contacted then
president of the Bakersfield Sister City Project Corporation, Frank Tripicchio, regarding
establishing a Sister City relationship; and
WHEREAS, Bucheon City sent a delegation to Bakersfield in April of 2005; and
WHEREAS, in September of 2005, Frank Tripicchio visited Bucheon City; and
WHEREAS, in October 2005, Mayor Gun-Pyo Hong and a delegation visited
Bakersfield; and
WHEREAS, during this visit, representatives from Bucheon City brought and
donated 10,000 books for the local Bakersfield Korean community to the Kern County
Library; and
WHEREAS, in April 2006, Mayor Hall and a delegation from Bakersfield went to
Bucheon City; and
WHEREAS, on April 11, 2006, Mayor Hall and Mayor Gun-Pyo Hong signed a
Memorandum of Understanding supporting and encouraging visits and cultural
exchanges between the two communities; and
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program is recognized worldwide and is designed to
promote mutual understanding and good will by an exchange of ideas, materials and
visits; and
WHEREAS, the Sister City Program has as its aim the bridging of cultural
differences that divide people, the removal of misunderstandings that hinder the
peaceful exchange of ideas and customs, and the building of a lasting peace that
strengthens individual freedom and cooperation in a wide variety of social, economic
and political relationships.
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Bakersfield does hereby
resolve that the City of Bucheon City, Republic of Korea, be designated as a Sister City
to the City of Bakersfield, authorizes the Mayor of Bakersfield to sign all documents to
implement the Sister City relationship, and that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded
to the Mayor of Bucheon City.
