A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD IN SUPPORT OF THE PROPOSED DOWNTOWN
LOCATION FOR A FEDERAL COURTHOUSE AND URGING THE
FEDERAL JUDICIAL CONFERENCE TO APPROVE THE COSTS
ASSOCIATED WITH THE PROJECT
WHEREAS, the federal government approached the City of Bakersfield in
2003 with plans to locate a new courthouse in Bakersfield; and
WHEREAS, the City approved Resolution 124-06 on May 10, 2006, urging
the General Services Administration, downtown property owners, and the City of
Bakersfield to collaborate for the purposes of satisfying GSA requirements and
competitive issues to the fullest extend possible, thereby facilitating the location
of the federal courthouse in downtown Bakersfield; and
WHEREAS, the General Services Administration (GSA) requested that
the City identify a site that could be donated and of 2.5 acres in size, the City
proposed a location in the existing Central Park that will be surrounded by the
new Mill Creek Development Project; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bakersfield provided requested information to the
GSA to enable the GSA to coordinate an initial assessment of the suitability of
the Mill Creek/Central Park location as a potential site;
WHEREAS, the GSA informed the City that due to significant increases in
project costs, additional approval for projects exceeding previously authorized
limits within the Judiciary Budget will be necessary;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Bakersfield
hereby:
1. Remains in strong support of the location of the federal courthouse
in downtown Bakersfield at the proposed Mill Creek/Central Park site;
2. The Council urges the Judicial Conference of the United States to
approve the costs of a federal courthouse in Bakersfield.
