117-07
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD
SUPPORTING STATE ASSEMBLY BILL 802 (SALAS)
CONCERNING CRIMINAL STREET GANGS.
WHEREAS, if adopted, this Bill would establish the California Commission on
Gang Prevention and Intervention; and
WHEREAS, that Commission would be made up of the Attorney General, several
legislators, several state agency members, a representative from a district attorney's
and a public defender's office and two representatives from local law enforcement; and
WHEREAS, the Commission is slated to develop a more strategic, coordinated,
and collaborative effort between the state, municipalities, law enforcement agencies,
social service providers, and the general public with the objective of significantly
curtailing gang involvement and its negative impact on communities; and
WHEREAS, the Commission will look to identify local, state and federal funding
sources; and
WHEREAS, the Commission would report back to the legislature on or before
July 1 , 2009 with its recommendations.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD AS FOLLOWS:
1 . The above recitals are true and correct;
2. The City of Bakersfield supports adoption of State Assembly Bill 802
(Salas) to stem the tide of gang activity.
3. Staff is instructed to prepare a letter of support for Mayor's signature.
