The Plaza opening is a big benchmark. It still has a number of elements to finish up later, but its a great new place to impress the visitor. 2. We have checked through the petitions received from Olive #4. Based on getting about 600 out of 2,000 property owners, we feel we should stop active efforts there for the foreseeable future. We haven't been allowed to see any petitions from Castro, so until we do, we will keep that one active. 3. The June Activities report from Recreation and Parks is enclosed. 4. The Council chamber remodel is underway. We hope you like it. 5. Responses to Council requests are enclosed, as follows: · Repair of the concrete gutter at Beech and 22® Streets; · Resurfacing of streets in the Dennen area. Detailed information and participation statistics are available. Please let me know if you require additional information. STAFF Attached is a copy of a letter that I received from Celine Martinez. In her letter, Ms. Martinez compliments Megan Darter (swim instructor) for her quality work and dedication. Also attached is a memo fi-om Code Enforcement thanking Henry Joke and his staff for their work. As I mentioned last month, I receive many compliments about Henry and the tree crew for their wonderful work. Holly Larson, our first recreation specialist, began work and in her first month is involved with a variety of projects. Attached is partial list of her current activities. RECREATION Individual reports from MLK and Lowell centers are attached. SUBJECT: Appreciation for Cleanups We would like to take this time to thank you for all &the support you and your crew have provided for our department and the .public. You 'have taken care of every complaint that we have referred to you in a timely manner. Thank you for your dedicated service. Current Assignments · Coordinated June 25 carnival at Washington Jr. High. · Planning July 23 carnival at Sequoia Middle School and August 13 carnival at Silver Creek Community Center. · Working with the Police Dept. on the Bike Rodeos scheduled for June 22 and August 12. · Arranged River Front Jazz Series scheduled for the 1st three Thursdays in September. (Smooth Jazz is co-sponsoring and all three bands are booked) · Making arrangements for Two Outdoor Adventure excursions to Jameson Ranch. (Overnight scheduled for Sept. 19 - 20, Harvest day trip on October 17) · Scheduled time and dates for Fall carnivals on Sept. 11 at Greenfield Jr. High and Oct. 15 at Deer Peak Park. · Beginning planning of the Halloween Carnival and Haunted Trail at Yokuts Park on October 29 and the Luminaria, Festival of Lights at Beach Park on December 12. · Collecting information for and assisting with brochure as needed. · Beginning recruitment process of temporary employees for After-School Playground Program which I will oversee. · Talking with prospective instructors to begin yoga, meditation and Greek dancing classes, definitely by January, if not sooner. · Scheduled for Grantsmanship Training in August. · Beginning planning for Soap Box Derby race in the Spring. (Currently making arrangements to use Alfred Harrell Front Rd.) · Working with Kit Olpin at KGET channel 17 to do a live morning show to promote carnivals. This year the camp has developed a camp song that is sung every morning at the beginning of camp. The new chess club started June 15. At this time we have about 15 participants. The Center celebrated Juneteenth on June 19 from 3pm - 5pm. There was a short program in the gym for the children and refreshments. GAME CENTER Attendance GREENFIELD JR. First · tournament was connect four and carooms with forty participants competing. Weekly tournaments will be held at various sites. Next tourney will be a pool tournament. Greenfield school district is very pleased with the program. They have invited individuals to witness the program. B) All four sites had a weekly party with a special theme for the party. Sequoia had a pizza party with 125 participants attending. The other three sites also had a special party, which had a large turn out. C) All four sites coordinated a theme booth for the first carnival at Washington Jr. High. All sites have been gathering donations for their party. Coming Events Martin Luther King Center July 9 Talent Show ACTIVITIES FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE FOR LOWELL SUMMER FUN CAMP Wednesday, June 10, 1998 The DARE Program brought Mc Gruff to talk to the children about safety, drugs and how to say no to drugs. The Children also got a chance to sit inside of a patrol car and find out how the different buttons work. Friday, June 12, 1998 30 Children were taken to the Martin Luther King Center for swimming and game activities. Wednesday, June 17, 1998 The Police Department had its bike Rodeo at Lowell Park. The children walked over to the park to participate. The were given hot dogs, chips, and a soda after the rodeo was over. Thursday, June 18, 1998 Captain Wales from the Army came to visit the children and tell them about Army Life. They got the chance to sit inside of a military Hum-V while he explained how different things were transported to different places. Friday, June 19, 1998 The Center took 34 children on a tour of the Bakersfield Californian. The children got to see how the paper was printed and later put together. Wednesday, June 24, 1998 The Lowell Center took 29 children by Van to the Rancho Rio Stables. Each Child got the chance to ride a horse and have their picture taken with it. They also got a mini tour of the stables and some tips on how to take care of a horse. Thursday, June 25, 1998 Lowell Center participated in the Carnival at Washington Jr. High. The Lowell Center Staff Supported two activities: The mini obstacle course and Bubble Up Game. Nine staff members were in attendance. Friday, June 26, The Lowell Center went to Fort Tejon for a tour taking 36 children. They had an enjoyable bus ride up to Fort Tejon plus an educational tour of the facility. They had a picnic lunch at the facility then a peaceful ride home, arriving at the center at 1:45 pm. Monday, June 29, 1998 The Lowell Center went to In-N-Out Burger for a tour. 27 children plus 8 workers got to see how the burgers were made and how everything was cut up fresh that moming. Later the children were treated to a free lunch courtesy of In-N-Out Burger. VOLUNTEERS Americore Workers, Ms. Joi and Ms. Parker, come in daily from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. They tutor the children in math and reading skills. Carrie Askew Volunteers two days a week with the children for a reading and cooking program. From 1:30 to 3:00 pm. I The main sewer line will be extended on Dennen Drive in the Fall (October) of 1998. After the sewer project has been complete, the Street Division will resurface the street. In the meantime, the Street Division will continue to maintain the street by patching the potholes, as needed. The sewer and resurfacing project should be complete by the end of October 1998. The Learn to Swim program, is an innovative approach for enabling individuals of all ages and !evels to learn swimming and water safety skills. We provide a positive, fun-filled atmosphere for our swimmers.
