The Arts 'Council of Kern has received grants from the California Arts Council for the fiscal year 1989-90 in the amount of $21,000. The state panel that reviews all partner's grant applications have made very favorable comments on our recent programs and progress. In their report they stated: "Unbelievable growth fo~ a fiscal year~1988-89 conditionally funded partner. The panel suggests, that the Council take a leadership role in the upgrading of the professionalism of arts in the region". In keeping with this advancement and increasing needs, The Arts Council of Kern is appealing to the City of Bakersfield for an investment 'in the amount of $20,000 for the 1990-91 fiscal year. The amount of $20,000, which will comprise· 10% of our projected budget for this coming year, is needed to accommodate the influx of programs, participants, and residents in the communities of Bakersfield. During the FY 1988-89, two half-time staff people were employed at the Council. At present~ three full-time'employees are handling the expanded transactions of~the Arts Council office. Their work includes publication and promotion of arts activities, programs spotlighting multi-cultural events, art edUcation programs for the public schools, and reaching out to underserved audienCes. In addition, ~technical assistance workshops for artists and the granting of Council funds to arts organizations ($32,000 budgeted for 90-9i) are special areas of focus and expansion here at the Council. The Council would be very interested in utilizing increased funding to ~magnify its services in the area of promotion of Arts and cultural events. This in turn will add to the positive image of Bakersfield and serve t~ promote the Bakersfield area for visitors and residents alike. One of the biggest events being developed for October is the "Kern Arts Expo 1990" The~Arts Council of Kern, at the request of many arts organizations, is coordinating and promoting this comprehensive festival of visual and performing arts. Approximately 50 events will be taking place in Bakersfield over a twelve day.period.~ The Arts Council Of Kern is looking forward to working with the city of Bakersfield in building toward a even higher quality of life for. the citizens~of our communitY.
