5. NEW BUSINESS
A. REQUEST FROM THE DOWNTOWN BUSINESS & PROPERTY OWNERS
ASSOCIATION (DBA) VISION COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS THE MISSION FOR
THEIR COMMITTEE REGARDING DOWNTOWN IMPROVEMENTS
Members from the Downtown Business Association "Vision Committee" gave
a brief presentation of their work on developing a mission for their committee.
They distributed a copy of their "draft" Mission Statement and discussed it with
the Council Committee members. Ray Watson discussed their efforts to get
property owners to work together to attract development and promote other
activities which would complement the City's efforts at the convention center
and the development of Centennial Plaza and the new arena project. They
emphasized that their focus was a community-based effort to promote the area
rather than expecting government to take the lead. Councilmember DeMond
noted a number of successes in the downtown which were achieved by groups
working together with the City. They included the downtown stmetscape
project, changes to downtown zoning, and others. Them was also a discussion
regarding the possible acquisition of the Federal Building by the City and how
it could fit into the vision for downtown.
