CLASS TITLE: UTILITY WORKER 348
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Under general supervision, performs routine unskilled and limited
semi-skilled manual w0~k in construction, ~ general maintenance
or refuse collection activities; and performs other work as
required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Works on a crew breaking concrete, loading broken concrete into
trucks, using hand tools in grading and backfilling; sprays and
hoes weeds; sprays trees; assists-in removal of trees; picks up
br~sh; performs general janitorial and unskilled maintenance work
in and around buildings, including loading refuse into .trucks;
routine maintenance, repair, and cleaninq of refuse containers,
bins and automated carts; performs deliveries and placement of bins
and containers~ methane monitorinq at landfill; assists in special
· cleanup projects; provides assistance in the recyclinq and waste
diversion programs; steamwashes and cleans automotive equipment and
workshops; serves as night watchman, and answers telephone; assists
semiskilled workers in a variety of road maintenance operations,
including patching; cleans offices and maintains facilities; cleans
litter receptacles.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: Some knowledge of power and hand
tools used in maintenance and construction.
Ability to read and write at a level for successful job
performance; abil~ity to perform heavy manual labor for extended
periods and under unfavorable weather Conditions; ability to
maintain qood relationships with fellow crew personnel and the
qeneral public; ability to understand and follow oral and written
instructions.
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid Class 3 or "C"
California driver's license.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Under general supervision is responsible for performing complex
personnel activities and responsible confidential'clerical functions,
and performs other Work as required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Assists in personnel testing programs by assemblying materials~ pre-
paring'recruitments and examinations, grading exams, and occasionally
interviewing applicants. Coordinates the typing~ posting~ indexing,
filing and cross-referencing of inter-departmental and'in~ra_departmenta
record keeping processes. At times assists in the training of clerical
- personnel and coordinates the work schedules. 5{aintains up-to-date
eligibility lists and records regarding wor!~nan's compensation program,
the City's medical insurance program and the City's retirement program.
Answers inquiries related to personnel.

Training and Experience: Graduation from high school, including or
supplemented by course work in business practices and'four years' of
experience in performing progressively responsible clerical work, in-
cluding experience in police and/or personnel work, or an equivalent
combination of training and experience which provides the capabilities
to perform the described duties.
Knowledge. Abilities and Skills: Knowledge of the forms and reports

work in maintenance and repair of municipal facilities and
equipment; directin the o erations of street maintenance and

Assigns crews to maintenance projects on city streets; transfers
workers from one project to another as work load changes;
coordinates the use of available personnel and equipment to obtain

.3 ~ MINIMUM IFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Graduation from highschool or'vocational
school, or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test, and
five years' experience in the construction and maintenance of
municipal facilities, ur equipment, streets, sewers, parks, or
refuse, including one year in a position of lead responsibility.

Considerable knowledge of the methods and practices of municipal
construction and maintenance; good knowledge of occupational
hazards and safety precautions, applicable' to area of work; good
