CLASS TITLE: W~STE WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR I 439
cLASs CHARACTERISTICS:
Under general supervision, performs a combination of semiskilled
and unskilled work in the operation of a waste water treatment
plant on an assigned shift involving the operation, maintenance,
servicing'and care of a variety of waste water treatment/plant

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
operates a waste water treatment plant on an assigned shift; check
gas meters,, flow meters and blower meters; adjusts equipment and
increases or decreases pumping capacity to proper pumping floW;
performs routine inspection and lubrication of engines'and ~umps;
checks clarifier, skimmer, grit collection system; carries out
proper procedures to insure proper operation; takes periodic sludge
'depth readings in the clarifiers and adjusts sludge pumping
equipment accordingly; takes hourly samples of raw waste water and
effluent for the plant laboratory or the health authorities;
performs routine maintenance..and cleaning work on buildings and
equipment as assigned; cuts grass and maintains landscaped areas;
reads meters, takes temperatures, completes daily logs, and records
meter readings.
~ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:"
Traininq and Experience: Graduation from high school or attainment
of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test, and one year experience
with semiskilled.construction work and/or equipment maintenance, or
Licenses or' Certificates: Must pass the examination for Class 1
Certificate issued by.the State Water Resources Control Board no
later than three years after the first examination is given after
employment.
Knowledqe, Abilities, and Skills: Some knowledge of the operation
and servicing requirements of plant machinery and equipment.
Ability to detect deficiencies in the plant machinery and equipment
while in operation; ability to read meters and gauges correctly and
to record readings properly in the plant records; ability ~and
aptitude for 'carrying out instructions without continuous

CLASS TITLE: WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR II 442
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
Under general supervision, performs semiskilled work in the
operation of a waste water treatement plant on an assigned shift
involving responsibility for the operation, maintenance, servicing
and care of a variety of waste water treatment plant equipment such
as pumps, electric motors, gas engines, valves, vacuum pumps, and
other'equipment, and must be able to handle general operational
on ~ ~ ft and make frequent inspections

to assure that proper treatment is taking place, a
.......-~..u -- ....... ~-.~.=~ Operators in this classification are responsible
for the operation of the more complex treatment units and processes
within the Treatment Plants, and under supervision, may. assign,
direct and review the work of Operator I's engaged in the operation
and maintenance of waste water treatment facilities and equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Takes charge of the operation of a waste water treatment plant
during a shift; checks gas meters, flow meters, and blower meters;
adjusts equipment and increases or decreases pumping capacity of
proper pumping flow; performs routine inspection and lubrication of
engines and pumps, checks .clarifier, skimmer, grit collection
system; carries out proper procedures to insure proper operation;
takes periodic sludge depth readings in the clarifiers and adjusts
sludge pumping equipment accordingly; takes hourly samples of raw
waste water and effluents for the plant laboratory or the health
authorities; performs routine maintenance and cleaniDg work on
buildings and equipment as assigned; reads meters, takes
temperatures, completes daily logs, records meter readings, and
makes out standard operation reports. May be requiredto assist in
training new operators in waste water treatment principles and
practices and to perform the'duties of an Operator I as required.
~ MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or attainment
of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test. ~-~
Licenses or Certificates: Possession of a valid Grade II
Certificate issued by the State Water Resources Control Board.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Good knowledge of the operation
and servicing requirements of waste water treatment plant machinery
and equipment; some knowledge of the prOcesses involved in the
treatment and disposal of waste water.

Ability to detect deficiencies in the plant machinery and equipment
while in operation; ability to read meters and gauges correctly and
to record readings properly in the plant records; ability to carry
out or assist in the repairs and maintenance of machinery,
equipment, and buildings; ability and aptitude for working without
continuous supervision and using independent judgment.
