Also, la a preliminary study to assess the fiF"!` effects of exposure of pregnant rats and mice td aerosols at concentrations ISO. 1000 and 2500 mg/m3 for ~= a, 6 hours a day throughout the period of organogeneais, teratogentc effects were produced at the high est concentration, but only !n mice. The conditions of these tatter experiirients did not allow a.cvnciusion as -~ ~ '. to whether the developmental toxicity was mediated by inltalativn of aerosol, percutaneotrs absorption of ';; , ethylene glycol from contaminated skin, or swallowing of ethylene glycol as a result of grooming the :: ~ wetted coat. Lt a further study, comparing effects from high aerosol concentration by whole-body. or ' ' '~~, nose-only exposure, it was shown that-nvse~nly expvstuie resulted in matet~ta! toxicity (1000 ttnd 2500 mglm3) and developmental Ivxicity in with minimal evidence of teratogenicity (2500 mg/m3). The no- effects concentration (based on maternal boaicity) was 500 mg/m3. In a further study in mice, no teratogenic effects cotild be produted when ethylene glycol was applied to the skin of pregnant mice aver the period or organogenesis: The above observations suggest that ethylene glycol is to be regarded as an , .. animal teratogen; there is currently no available information to suggest that ethylene glycol caused birth defects in humans. Cutaneous application of ethylene glycol is ineffective in producing developmental tvAicity; exposure to high aerosol evncenttation is only minimally effective in producing developmental . toxicity; the major route for producing developmental toxicity is pervrally. Two cluonic feeding studies, using rats and mice, have not produced any evidence that ethylene glycol ~a~~~e rlnee-related increases in tumor incidence, or a tii[i'erent< pattern of tutiaors compared with tuttreated ,,,~. ADDITIONAL TOXICOLOGY INFORMATION: This product contains zinc alkyl dithiophosphates iZDDPs}. Several ZDDPs have been reported to have weak mutagenic activity in culturad mammalian cells but only at concentrations that were toxic to the test cells. We d 0 not believe that there is any mutagenic risk to workers exposed to ZDDPs. This product contains petroleum base oils which may be refined by various ' processes including severe solvent extraction, severe hydrocracking, or severe hydrotreating. None of the oils requires a cancer warning under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (Z9 CFR 1410.1Z00). These oils have not been listed in the National Toxicology Program (NTP} Annual Report nor have they been classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC} ash carcinogenic to humans (Group 1), probably carcinogenic to humans (Group ZA}, or possibly carcinogenic to humans (Group ZB). During use in engines, contamination of oil with low levels of cancer-causing combustion products occurs, Dsed motor oils have been shown to cause skin cancer in mice following repeated application and continuous exposure. Brief or intermittent skin contact with used motor oil is not expected to have serious effects in humans if the oil is thoroughly removed by washing with soap and water. The objective is to rapidly achieve and maintain a blood ethanol level of approaicnately llx? tag/d1 by giving a :• ~:. loading dose of ethanol followed by a~ maintenance dose. Intravenous .administration of ethanol is the preferred route. Hemodialysis may be required. 4Methylpyrazole, apotent inhibitor or alcohol dehydrogenase, has been used therapeutically to decrease the metabolic consequences of - ethylene glycol poisioning. Additional therapeutic modalities which may . decrease the adverse consequences of ethylene glycol metabolism are the administration of bulb thiamine and pyridoxine. Pulmonary edema with hypoxemia has been described in a number of patients following poisoning ~vittt ethylene glycol. Respiratory support with mechanical ventilation may be required. .~-- F- ,'~`~ `' . ..,~,+: ,, There may be cranial nerve involvement in the late stages of toxicity from swallowed ethylene glycol lit particular, effects have been reported involving the seventh, eighth, and ninth cranial nerves, presenting wiW bilateral facial paralysis, dittiinished hearing and dysphagia. . , ;~ • ~ .I + A' ~•~ ,. ~ -~ ~ I~~Y:'I;il3 _ ~~f~V" 1}~' i~; •. _ `ti xl.. ~:•?i.,.t;~lli'ry L'.~ G Material Safety Data Sheet FIRST BRANDS - _ : , _ _ STP®HD/Fleet Antifreeze/Coolant `fir • -~- ..
