LEAK DETECTION AND MONITORING PROCEDURES: The majority of the hazardous material at the facility is stored in storage tanks or drums, which are routinely visited by the employees and shop managers. Therefore, any hazardous material spills and leaks will be detected visually by the employees immediately. Any underground tanks, if any, are monitored according to the guidelines from the local regulating agency. The Safety Committee and the Environmental Health and Safety Consultant also visit the hazardous storage sites on a quarterly basis. B. EMPLOYEE AND AGENCY NOTIFICATION: All employees are trained to report any spill to the Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator, Terry Thompson, Parts Director. The Environmental Health and Safety Coordinator or his alternate will report the release or threatened release of a hazardous material to: 1) local fire emergency response personnel (9-1-1) 2) the Office of Emergency Services (800) 852-7550 3) or the local unified program agency (661) 326-3979 C. HAZARD ASSESSMENT AND PREVENTION MEASURES: Prevention begins with employee training in Hazard Communication. Hazardous materials are stored in appropriate containers in suitable (isolated and separate) locations, in bermed or diked areas, or stored on concrete or asphalt. These hazardous materials are properly contained. Absorbents and fire extinguishers are nearby, if ever needed. -Shop is cleaned on a periodic basis for debris and trash. Safety inspections by an outside health and safety consulting firm are conducted on a quarterly basis. B. RELEASE CONTAINMENT AND/OR MITIGATION: Spill absorbent materials are available in the shop area. Hazardous waste tanks or drums are provided with secondary containment. Spills of hazardous material are promptly diked and the spill absorbed with suitable absorbent. The absorbent is later disposed of per hazardous regulations. C. CLEAN-UP AND RECOVERY PROCEDURES: Spill absorption material is stored in the shop area. Employees are trained to contain the hazardous materials spills using the spill absorption material. The spill absorption material is also used to create barriers to prevent hazardous material spills from entering the sewer system. The absorbent is later disposed of per hazardous regulations. Inventory is complete -with copies of the .MSDS's for each hazardous material and is accessible to all employees. - Location and proper use of fire and -spill control equipment Employees are informed of the location of the fire and spill control equipment. Employees are trained on proper use of fire and spill control equipment. - Proper use of personal protective equipment ~~ f i Taught the importance and use of each appropriate personal protective equipment (safety gloves, glasses, respirators, etc.). Specific hazards of each chemical to which they may be exposed, including the pathways of exposure (i.e., skin absorption, inhalation, ingestion). Identify the most commonly used hazardous materials (components) used at the. facility. Identify physical properties. Identify primary (iazards. Identify methods of immediate treatment. Emergency response team members are additionally trained in the following procedures and will act as a liaison for the fire department. - Personnel rescue procedures Take headcount; inform fire dept of unaccounted for personnel. - Shutdown of operations Identify potentially hazardous leaks and spills, report to the local fire department and Office of Emergency Services (800) 852-7550. - Use, maintenance, and replacement of emergency response equipment Check first aid kit on a periodic basis; replace first aid items as needed.
