Ingestion - severe burns and ulceration of mouth, throat, esophagus and stomach, damage to kidney and intestinal tract. ., 'r ~.i + PAGE 3 -Douglas Safeguard Battery N MEDICAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Respiratory exposure to airborne sulfuric acid will aggravate lung damage or other pulmonary conditions. Harmful effects of lead are increased for a person with dietary deficiencies in calcium, iron and zinc. ROUTES OF ENTRY: Lead/compounds: Ingestion, inhalation. Electrolyte: Skin (absorption), eyes, inhalation CARCINOGENICITY: National Toxicology Program: None found LA.R.C. Monographs: Lead - No; Sulfuric Acid -Yes OSHA: None found EPA CAG: Lead -Yes; Sulfuric Acid -None found HUMAN HEALTH AFFECTS: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified "strong inorganic acid mist containing sulfuric acid" as a Category 1 carcinogen, a substance that is carcinogenic to humans. This classification does not apply to liquid forms of sulfuric acid or sulfuric acid solutions contained within a battery. Inorganic acid mist (including sulfuric acid mist) is not generated under normal use of this product. Misuse of the product, such as overcharging, may result in the generation of sulfuric acid mist. EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES (Exposure to sulfuric acid/electrolyte): 1. Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. If person is unconscious or experiencing breathing difficulty, arrange for emergency transport to a hospital. Administer oxygen/CPR as appropriate. 2. Eyes: Wash eyes with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes or until acid is removed. Hold lids open while washing. See physician immediately. 3. Skin: Remove all contaminated clothing, flush skin with copious quantities of water until free of acid/electrolyte. 4. Ingestion: DO NOT II~rDUCE VOMITING, do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious patient, see physician immediately. If conscious, wash out mouth, do not swallow. EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES (Exposure to lead and lead compounds): `E~=x 1. Inhalation: Remove from exposure, see physician. . 2. Eyes (Dry oxide/paste): Wash eyes with copious quantities of running water for 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention. 3. Skin: Not a direct route of entry. 4. Ingestion: Do not induce vomiting, do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious patient, see physician immediately. `f SECTION 6 -SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: If product is involved in a fire, the release of dust or fumes from damaged cases may result. Use of full face or half-mask respirator with HEPA cartridge will provide protection from lead. Additional protection including SCBA may be necessary to ensure protection from NOx and/or sulfuric acid fumes. t- ;, ~k_~. ,' q, PAGE 4 -Douglas Safeguard Battery SECTION 6 -SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION (Continued) VENTILATION: For enclosed applications follow NEC and NFPA standards. :±~ ' . PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Rubber or nitrile gloves, apron and safety glasses with face shield or splash proof goggles should be worn when handling battery if the battery may be damaged or cracked. Gloves and safety glasses are generally adequate for normal installation and servicing. Refer to NEC and NFPA standards for special applications. OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT/PRACTICES: Good personal hygiene should be practiced when handling batteries, particularly if cracked or damaged to mitigate potential exposures to electrolyte or lead compounds. Follow manufacturer provided installation instructions and diagrams -when installing or~ servicing battery systems. Additional precautions maybe required for applications in confined spaces. ,, SECTION 7 -SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND SPILL/LEAK PROCEDURES ERECAUTIONS IN HANDLING: Exercise caution during normal handling and storage due to weight of battery units. Do not short circuit. , OTHER PRECAUTIONS: Batteries should be stored in an upright position and in locations free from potential impact, fire, electrical or other hazards. MATERIAL SPILLS OR RELEASE: In the event of a fire or release of hazardous materials to the environment, follow applicable local, state and federal standards for release reporting, remediation and disposal. Materials suitable for neutralizing battery electrolyte include, but are not limited to: soda ash (sodium bicarbonate), baking soda, agricultural lime and commercial products designed for inorganic acid spills. WASTE DISPOSAL: Spent lead acid, batteries should be recycled at an approved secondary lead smelter. Cracked or damaged batteries, including released electrolyte, should be promptly recovered and sent for disposal at an approved secondary lead smelter or hazardous waste management facility. Follow all DOT and EPA hazardous waste and hazardous material regulatory requirements which may apply to the packaging, labeling and shipping of 'haste or scrap battery materials to approved recycling or disposal facilities. ' SECTION 8 -SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: TRANSPORTATION Douglas Safeguard Valve-Regulated Batteries are classified as "non-spillable" and meet the requirements of Special Provision A67 of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.
