ARESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD ESTABLISHING A RECORDS-RETENTION
SCHEDULE FOR THE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND APPROV-
ING DESTRUCTION OF RECORDS IN ACCORDANCE THERE-
WITH.
WHEREAS, except for records affecting the title to real
property or liens thereon, court records, records required to be kept
by statute, records less than two years old and the minutes, ordinances,
or resolutions of the legislative body of the Council and other boards
or commissions, Government Code Section 34090 authorizes the head of
a city department to destroy any city record, document, instrument,
book or paper, under his charge, without making a copy thereof, after
the same is no longer required, with the approval of the legislative
body by resolution and the written consent of the City Attorney; and
WHEREAS, the Council, upon the request of the Chief of
Police, desires to establish a retention schedule for records under
the charge of the police department and to approve immediate destruc-
tion of records in accordance therewith and the continued destruction
of the listed items in accordance with such retention schedule.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City
of Bakersfield that the following retention schedule for records, docu-
ments, instruments, books or papers under the charge of the police
department is hereby adopted and pursuant to Section 34090 et seq. of
the Government Code of the State of California, approval is hereby
granted for the immediate destruction of the items listed which have
been retained for the required period of time and for the continued
destruction of such listed items in accordance with such retention
schedule:
I Two (2) Years:
1. Duplicate teletype requests
2. Duplicate traffic citations
3. Dispatch cards with no ca~e
4. Field interrogation reports
5. Unsolicited rap sheets

6. Released stored cars (impound cards)
7. Audited expense vouchers
8. Record of city agenda delivery
9. Dealer's report of sale
10. Ne~release
11. Audited imprest fund
12. Duplicate department time report
II Three (3) Years:
1. Notice of stored vehicle to registered owner
2. Dispatch cards with case numbers
3. Arrest resume
4. Correspondence
5. Teletype log book
III
Four (4) Years:
1. Noninjury traffic accidents
2. Bicycle registrations
IV Five (5) Years:
1. Crime reports
2. Arrest cards
3. Injury traffic accidents
4. Card room permits
5. Miscellaneous special reports
6. Overtime slips
V Seven (7) Years:
1. Burglary - safe
2. Robbery
3. Assault with a deadly weapon
4. Attempted murder
5. Kidnapping
6. Rape
7. Sex offenses involving children
8. Sex perversion
9. Chief's memorandums
10. Vice investigations
11. Narcotics investigations
VI Indefinitely
1. Homicide
2. Personnel records, inactive and active
3. Dispatch log
4. Duty roster
5. Personnel eligibility lists
6. General and special orders
7. Assault on police officer

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was passed
and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular
meeting thereof held on the 25th day of July , 1977, by the
