A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF BAKERSFIELD HONORING FOUR FRESNO BEE
NEWSPAPERMEN.
WHEREAS, four newspapermen in Fresno recently proved to
a court of law that they had an "established, articulated moral
principle" in retaining the confidentiality of news sources, in
the face of the threat of long imprisonment; and
WHEREAS, their resolute and unyielding refusal to com-
promise their professional principle provides a significant practical
example of courageous support, and not mere lip service, for our
constitutional provisions prohibiting restraint of the liberty and
freedom of the press; and
WHEREAS, this Council believes that constant, vigilant
and courageous support for the principle and fact of freedom of the
press is of urgent importance, as that freedom exists and should be
preserved, to insure the unimpeded flow of information indispensable
to the existence of a democratic society.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City
of Bakersfield as follows:
1. That the City Council of the City of Bakersfield
honors the four newsmen of the Fresno Bee and the principle for which
they stand--the preservation of a free and untrammeled press as an
indispensable guardian of our freedom.
2. That the City Clerk shall transmit copies of this
Resolution to James H. Bort, Jr., George Gruner, William K. Patterson
and Joe Rosato and to other persons and organizations as directed by
the members of the City Council.
