WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Bakersfield are
shocked and appalled by the vote of the United Nations General
Assembly's Third World Committee declaring that "Zionism is a form
of racism and racial discrimination"; and
WHEREAS, the United Nations' action is perversion of the
truth that will serve to weaken our dedication to the elimination
of all forms of racism in this country and around the world; and
WHEREAS, the United State~ Representative to the United
Nations described this action as "an obscene act" and stated that
the passage of this vote put the United Nations "at the point of
officially endorsing anti-Semitism"; and
WHEREAS, the Senate of the United States condemned the
United Nations' action in a resolution adopted withoutdissent;
and
WHEREAS, the citizens of the City of Bakersfield recognize
that Zionism embodies the most noble ideals of democracy; ideals
that all Americans can fully appreciate; that Zionism is the modern
expression of the ancient Jewish heritage; that Zionism is the
national liberation movement of the Jewish people exiled from their
historic homeland and dispersed among the nations of the world; and
that Zionism, realizing the universal vision of the prophets of
Israel, is creating a society based on social justice and freedom
for all the inhabitants of Israel, irrespective of religious beliefs,
race, or sex.

this Resolution, the Bakersfield City Council rejects and condemns
the action in the United Nations, declaring Zionism as a form of

their forthright stand in this struggle; and
