HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 94-74 RESOLUTION NO. 94-74 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD SUPPORTING A NATIONAL CEMETERY IN KERN COUNTY. WHEREAS, since the early days of our Nation it has been the continuing policy of the Government to provide for the burial of its deceased war veterans in National Cemetaries; and WHEREAS, the U. S. National Cemeteries of the Presidio of San Francisco and Fort Rosecrans at San Diego and the Golden Gate National Cemetery at San Bruno are completely filled and closed; and WHEREAS, the 93d Congress did enact PL 93-43, "National Cemetery Act of 1973," establishing within the Veterans Administra- tion a National Cemetery System for the internment of deceased servicemen and veterans; and WHEREAS, there are many sites within the County of Kern ideally situated for the establishment and perpetuation of a National Cemetery, some of which are already owned by the Government; and WHEREAS, the Kern County area is within the geographical center and embraces the population center of the state, is serviced o by two major transcontinental railroads and two major national highways, and has a modern airport system including an ultra-modern terminal and sixteen satellite airfields throughout the county; and WHEREAS, this area enjoys an equable climate throughout the year, which proves of great benefit to those families wishing to visit the resting places of loved ones at any season; and WHEREAS, two of the Nation's largest military installations (Naval Weapons Center and Edwards Air Force Base) are located within Kern County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield of the County of Kern, State of California, that the President of the United States, Federal and State legis- lators, appropriate committees in Congress, and other appropriate agencies be, and they are hereby urged to recommend the establishment of a National Cemetery in Kern County, and this Council does hereby authorize and support the efforts of the Kern County Veterans Affairs Council, Kern County Board of Trade, Chambers of Commerce, civic and fraternal organizations, in expediting this worthwhile project. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Bakersfield offers the fullest cooperation and assistance to the County of Kern in furthering this meritorious endeavor. o0o I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular meeting thereof held on the 18th day of November, 1974, by the following vote: AYf~,: ~OUNCILMI~N BARTON, BI.I~ECKER, HE.
