A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD URGING THE ADOPTION OF THE VALLEY
ROUTE FOR RAILWAY PASSENGER TRANSPORTATION
BETWEEN LOS ANGELES AND SAN FRANCISCO.
WHEREAS, the National Rail Passenger Department has
under consideration and study rail passenger service between
San Diego and Seattle, and
WHEREAS, the Railpax plan in California provides
discretionary alternate routes, one coastal and one inland,
through the San Joaquin Valley.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the
City of Bakersfield as follows:
1. The San Joaquin route be selected for the following
reasons:
a. A San. Joaquin Valley route would serve a far
greater amount of people than other suggested routes;
b. Passenger service in the Valley area in all
forms is lacking relative to the service afforded coastal routes;
furthermore, there would be less conflict with vehicular traffic
as compared with other routes;
c. It is vital to the national defense in that
the passenger service will aid in transporting servicemen and
their families to the many inland military establishments located
along the route.
2. Copies of this Resolution be forwarded to Congressman
Robert Mathias.
