RESOLUTION NO. 88 - 70
A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF BAKERSFIELD DECLARING ITS SUPPORT OF
"OPERATION GRATITUDE" AND "APPRECIATION
DAY" ON TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15, 1970.
WHEREAS, law enforcement officers and firefighters
maintain a 24-hour-a-day vigil, always ready to risk their lives
in order to protect each and every American citizen from the dangers
of crime, accident and natural calamities; and
WHEREAS, more often than not, Americans have taken for
granted the great service and sacrifices which have been made by
these protectors of our civilization; and
WHEREAS, with this lack .of gratitude now having been
turned to alienation, animosity and violence on the part of some
in our society, it is now necessary and appropriate that all
Americans honor and show gratitude to these faithful servants and
protectors of our Nation, our lives and our property; and
WHEREAS, in line with its "Honor America" theme, the
National Committee for Responsible Patriotism has launched "OPERATION
GRATITUDE" as a national show of honor, respect, gratitude and
solidarity for law enforcement officers and firefighters, commencing
December 5, 1970 with various programs and culminating in "APPRECIA-
TION DAY" on December 15, 1970.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, by the City Council
of the City of Bakersfield, State of California, as follows:
1. That personnel of the City and all governmental
subdivisions under the jurisdiction of this City shall join in
"APPRECIATION DAY" on December 15, 1970 by participating in the
following activities to honor and show our respect and gratitude for
the outstanding services of law enforcement officers and firefighters:

(a) Fly the American flag;
(b) Drive with headlights on during daylight hours;
(c) Ring church bells for five minutes from 11:55
A. M. until 12:00 noon, to be followed by a
minute of silence;
(d) Have fire apparatus pulled out on apron of
fire stations from 11:55 A. M. until 12:00
noon and toll the bells.
2. That all citizens of Bakersfield and all other
governmental units, organizations and groups are also urged to join
with all Americans everywhere and the National Committee for
Responsible Patriotism in showing honor and deep gratitude for
all law enforcement officers and firefighters during "OPERATION
GRATITUDE. "
3. That the City Clerk of the City of Bakersfield is hereby
directed to furnish copies of this resolution to the National Com-
mittee for Responsible Patriotism, Inc., the Kern County Firefighters
Union, Inc., the Bakersfield Fire Department, and the Bakersfield
Police Department.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed
and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular
meeting thereof held on the 14th day of December, 1970, by the
following vote:
