HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 24-81RESOLUTION NO.":24~81' A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD OPPOSING TERMINATION OF AMTRAK SERVICE IN THE SAN JOAQUIN'VALLEY. WHEREAS, the United States Department of Transportation has proposed to terminate AMTRAK service in the San Joaquin Valley; and WHEREAS, utilization of AMTRAK in the San Joaquin Valley has increased by nearly 78% during the past year; and WHEREAS, AMTRAK presently provides essential transporta- tion into and out of the City of Bakersfield; and WHEREAS, the proposed elimination of passenger rail service would leave a serious void in the regional transportation system, cause irreparable damage to the prosperous growth of the City of Bakersfield, and deprive the residents of the Bakersfield area of the most fuel-efficient mode of transportation; and WHEREAS, while .the~'curtailment of-government spending for transportation is admirable, it should only be done after efficient alternative transportation is established. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield as follows: The City Council of the City of Bakersfield opposes the proposal of the United States Department of Transportation to terminate AMTRAK service to and from the City of Bakersfield. o0o I HEREBY CERTIFY that the~foregoing Resolution was passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular meeting thereof held on the 22nd day of April, 1981, by the following vote:' AYES: COUNCILMEN: BARTO , CHRISTENSEN, MEANS, PAYNE, ~, ROCKOFF, STRONG NOES: COUNC~LM2N:__~ .
