RESOLUTION OF-THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD
CALLING A SPECIAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION IN SAID CITY FOR
THE PURPOSE OF SUBMITTING A PROPOSITION TO ADOPT AN
ORDINANCE TO THE ELECTORS OF SAID CITY OF BAKERSFIEID,
ORDERING THE CONSOLIDATION 0F SAID SPECIAL MUNICIPAL
ELECTION WITH THE STATE DIRECT PRIMARY ELECTION TO BE
HELD ON JUNE 8, 1954, ~AND REQ~UESTING THE BOARD OF
SUPERVISORS_OF THE COUNTY OF KERN TO ORDER THE CON-
SOLIDATION OF SAID ELECTIONS.
WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Bakersfield on the 29th
day of March, 1954,1'passed and adopted Ordinance No./~l. _. New
Series, to provide for the increase'.in the monthly salary of council-
men of-the City of Bakersfield from fifty dollars to two-hundred
dollars, and
WHEREAS, Section 18 of the Charter of the City. of Bakersfield
as ratified and approved' January.+23, 1915, provides that the salary
of councilmen first elected under said Charter shall be fifty dollars
.~per month, and that thereafter the Council may, by ordinance sub-
mitted to a referendum at any municipal election, Change the salary
of members of the Council,
NOW., THEEFOE, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD DOES
HEREBY RESOLVE, DETERMINE, AND ORDER, as follows:
1. That a special election be held, and the same is hereby
called to be held in the City of Bakersfield, California, on the
8th day of June, 1954, for the purpose of submitting to the qualifi-
ed ~S~r. ed electors of said city a proposition for the approval
or rejection of the following ordinance, to wit:

"ORDINANCE NO ~ NEW SERIES
AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF BAERSFIELD
FIXING THE SALARIES OF COUNCILMEN.
WHEREAS, Section 18 of the Charter of the City
of' Bakersfield as ratified and approved January
· 23, 1915, provides that the· salary of councilmen
first elected under said Charter shall be fifty
dollars per~month, and that thereafter the Council
may, by ordinance submitted to a referendum 'at any
municipal election, change the salary of members
of the council, and
WHEREAS, since the adoption of said Charter, drastic
economic changes have occurred, causing the afore-
mentioned provision to be outmoded and obsolete,and
WHEREAS, this Council believes that in keeping with
the present financial and' economic status of our
community, and for the purpose of inducing a great-
er number of civic minded citizens to compete for
the office of councilmen who otherwise could not
afford to meet the demands placed upon them by the
duties imposed by that'~ Office, the salary of council-
men should be increased.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT 0RDAiNED by+the ~Council of the
City of Bakersfield, as· follows:
SECTION 1.
The salary of councilmen shall be Two Hundred Dollars
($200.00) per month.
SECTION 2.
This ordinance shall become effective upon its approval
by a majority of the qualified registered electors
voting thereon.

.IHEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Ordinance was
passed and adopted by the Council of the City of
Bakersfield, at a regular meeting thereof held on
the 29th day of March, 1954, by the following vote:

2. That said proposition shall be placed on the ballot to
be used at said municipal election in the following words and
figures, to wit:
CITYOF BAKERSFIELDREFERENDUM:An
ordinance entitled"An 0rdinance.-of
'the City of Bakersfield'fixing the~.
salaries of Councilmen", fixing the
salary of Councilmen at Two Hundred
dollars ($200.00)per month.

3. That said special municipal election be and the same is
hereby ordered consolidated~'with the State Direct Primary Election
to be held June 8, 1954, and the Board of Supervisors of the County
of Kern'is hereby requested to order such consolidation in accord-
ance with the provisions of this Resolution.
4. That within the City of Bakersfield the precincts, polling
places, and officers of election of said special municipal election
shall be the same as those provided for said State Direct Primary
~lection within said city. The Board of Supervisors of the County
of Kern is hereby authorized to canvass the returns of said special
municipal election, and shall certify the result of the canvass of
said returns to the Council of the City of Bakersfield, who shall
thereUD~n declare the results thereof.
5. That the Clerk of the Council is hereby directed to transmit
· ~o the Clerk of s~id Board of SupervisorS, a certified copy of this
Resolution, as required by Section 10051.1 of the Elections Code.

I EREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed
and adopted by 'the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular
meeting thereof held on the 29th day of March, 1954, by the follow-
ing vote:
