Vfi~EREAS~ the Santa Fe Railway Company has filed with the City
Council of the City of Bakersfield~ a petition for the renewal Of its
franchise which authorizes it to operate trains upon itS' tracks to~
from~ and through the City of Bakersfield~ which application has been
referred to the electorate of the City of Bakersfield by reason of a
petition filed with the City Council of the City of Bakersfield~ and
WIiEREAS~ the City Council is mindful of the fact that a majority
of .the voters of the City of Bakersfield are interested in being
informed as to its attitude with respect to the granting ~r denying
of said franchise; and
UHERE&S~ the denial of said, franchise might delay.and r'etard the
free flow of conmmerce to~ from and through the 'City of BakerSfield and
delay the all-out war 'effort of the United'States of. America~ and affect
the properties and investments of thirty-two industries 1.ocated along
the right of way of said railway company; and
WHERE.AS~ it is the opinion of the Council that for tie foregoing
reasons the best interests and-general welfare of'the City of Bakers-
field and its surrounding conm~unities will be'best served by the grant-
ing of said franchise~
NOW~ T}~REFORE~ BE iT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the
City of BakerSfield favors the granting of a renewed franchise to the
Santa Fe Railway Company~ and by this resolution urges the registered
voters of the City of Bakersfield to vote "Yes" on Proposition @1 at
the special election to be held June 26~ 19~%,
