HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 6-24RESOLUTiON.NO. 6-24 A RESOLUTION 'Ei'~I'DORStNG THE MATILijA HIGHWAY iN THE STATE OF CALiFORi~ iA. as follows: BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CO~JNCIL OF THE CiTY OF B~RSFIELD, WHEREAS, the present overcrowded and restrictive con- ditions of the Ridge Route of the California State HiSaway System, together with the overcrowded condition of the one-way entrance to to the City of Los Angeles, retard the free flow of trade and travel between the San Joaquin Valley and the City ~nd Harbor of Los Angeles, and WHEREAS, the distance between Los Angeles and San Francisco, by the Coast Highway, is 452 miles against 407 miles by the San Joaquin Valley Highway, and / V~XREAS, it is necessary to r~lieve ~hese conditions, and give to the San Joaquin Valley an equality'of choice with the Coast Hi~ahway, the Matilija Highway, leaving the Ridge Route at Tejon Pass and thence through the Santa Barbara National Forest for approximately fifty miles to the town of Fillmore, is proposed; and WHXREAS, we are advised that this route will greatly avoid the sharp curves of the Ridge Route, traverse, for the greater part of its distance, a beautiful forest area with living streams, thereby adding a most attractive asset to the wonderful diversity of California, and likewise a beautiful gateway to invite tourist and other travel to the San Joaquin Valley; and ~/~HE~EAS, the added smnmit elevations of this route are more than 1500 feet less than the Ridge, Cahuenga Pass Route, and no grade should exceed five per cent; and ~tEREAS, the completion of the State Highway now under construction along the Coast Route between Santa Men!ca and Venturn, and Simi Valley Highway, the Ventura Highway, the Wilshire Boulevard, and the proposed Sepulevda Boulevard to the Harbor of Los Angeles, thus ~ividing traffic and furnishing other entrances to the City and Harbor of Los Angeles, plainly point out the reasons why now the San Joaquin Valley should co-operatively ask that the proposed Matilija Highway be placed on the State Highway Program, as Federal States National crests, will be moneys for Highways throug~h United ~ available when this project is recommended by the State Highway Commission; THEREF0~, in harmony with the request from the Bakers- field Civic Commercial Association, we the City Council of the City of Bakersfield respectfully request that the Honorable Hi~away Commission of the State of California support this activity and that -1- a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Administration Officials of other Cities of San Joaquin Valley. - - -o0o- - - I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was duly and regularly passed at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Bakersfield held on the 7~ day .of July, 192~, by the following vote: Ayes-Austin~ Baer, Carlisle.
