A RESOLUTION 'Ei'~I'DORStNG THE
MATILijA HIGHWAY iN THE STATE
OF CALiFORi~ iA.
as follows:
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CO~JNCIL OF THE CiTY OF B~RSFIELD,
WHEREAS, the present overcrowded and restrictive con-
ditions of the Ridge Route of the California State HiSaway System,
together with the overcrowded condition of the one-way entrance to
to the City of Los Angeles, retard the free flow of trade and
travel between the San Joaquin Valley and the City ~nd Harbor of
Los Angeles, and
WHEREAS, the distance between Los Angeles and San
Francisco, by the Coast Highway, is 452 miles against 407 miles by
the San Joaquin Valley Highway, and
/
V~XREAS, it is necessary to r~lieve ~hese conditions,
and give to the San Joaquin Valley an equality'of choice with the
Coast Hi~ahway, the Matilija Highway, leaving the Ridge Route at
Tejon Pass and thence through the Santa Barbara National Forest for
approximately fifty miles to the town of Fillmore, is proposed; and
WHXREAS, we are advised that this route will greatly
avoid the sharp curves of the Ridge Route, traverse, for the greater
part of its distance, a beautiful forest area with living streams,
thereby adding a most attractive asset to the wonderful diversity
of California, and likewise a beautiful gateway to invite tourist
and other travel to the San Joaquin Valley; and
~/~HE~EAS, the added smnmit elevations of this route are
more than 1500 feet less than the Ridge, Cahuenga Pass Route, and
no grade should exceed five per cent; and
~tEREAS, the completion of the State Highway now under
construction along the Coast Route between Santa Men!ca and Venturn,
and Simi Valley Highway, the Ventura Highway, the Wilshire Boulevard,
and the proposed Sepulevda Boulevard to the Harbor of Los Angeles,
thus ~ividing traffic and furnishing other entrances to the City and
Harbor of Los Angeles, plainly point out the reasons why now the
San Joaquin Valley should co-operatively ask that the proposed
Matilija Highway be placed on the State Highway Program, as Federal
States National crests, will be
moneys for Highways throug~h United ~
available when this project is recommended by the State Highway
Commission;
THEREF0~, in harmony with the request from the Bakers-
field Civic Commercial Association, we the City Council of the City
of Bakersfield respectfully request that the Honorable Hi~away
Commission of the State of California support this activity and that
-1-
a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Administration Officials
