OF BAKERSFIELD TENTATIVE. 7~Y APPROVING ~- PRO-
PROSAL OF THE ST-~TE OF CAIJF~0~I~-. TO RE-ROUTE
PORTIONS OF STATE' ROUTE 178 IN THE_.~ CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA.
WHEREAS, the State of California through its Department
of 'Public Works, Division of Highways,· proposes certain revisions
to the State· Highway System in the Bakersfield area, and
· WHEREAS, portions of the plan contern. plate the m~erouting
· o£ east-west traffic on State Sign Route 178 through the City of
Bakersfield, between the intersection of "N" and 24th Streets and
the intersection of Baker and Niles St~eets, as sho~rn on the map
entitled "Location Map - Routes 4, ~7, and 58" dated December 30,
1954, revised March ll, 1955, further identified as District VI Draw-
ing No. R-786, and '
WHEREAS, the plan further conteraplates the establishment
of one-way streets on 23rd and 24th Streets, bet~een "E" Street and
"N" Street and on Niles and Montem-ey Streets, between Alta Vista and
Broom Streets, and
WHEREAS, the plan further contemplates the con. struction
of a freeway between "N" Street at 24th Street and A. lta Vista Street
at Niles Street, and
WHEREAS, since the completion of Mano~ Street which co~mects
0ildale with Union Avenue will require an intercl%ange at Union ~.venue
and 26th Street or the extension of Niles Street, the Stats may re-
arrange its plans of the freeway stracture between "N" Street and
the intersection of Niles Street and Zilta Vista Street' to provide
said interchange, ' and'
EREAS the p~-oposed improvement is 'considered-to Ibe in
,
the public interest and necessary and desirable for the proper and
Safe moverRent of traffic at present and in the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City
of Bakersfield hereby· tentatively approves the overall plan of the
State hereinbefore described, as modified by Plan E3493, with the
understanding that the City wiI1 be given the opportunity, if it so
desires, to participate ina public hearing to be conducted by the
State Highway Commission prior to adoption Of the rerouting of State
Highways involved and declaration of portions to have the status of
a freeway.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed
and adopted by the Council of theCity of Bakersfield at a regular
meeting thereof held on the 17th day of March, 1958, by the follow-
.ing vote:
