HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 37-56 RESOLUTION N0. 37-5G~ RESOLUTION 0F THE COD~TOZL OF T~ CiTY 0P BAFDERSFIELD DECLARING RESULTS 0F SPECIAL PffD~YICIPAL ELECTION B~-,j) IN SAID CIT~ ON JUNE 5, 1956. ~,frFEREAS, this Council duly md regularly called and. provided for the holding of a special election within the City of Bakersfield on June 5, 1956, for the ptu, pose of submitting to the qualified· voters of said Cit~ the following propositions: PROPOSITION l~!'O. ]. ~ (C) ~ends Section 14 and adds subdivision (a) tb Section ~0 of 'the Bakersfield City Charter to provide for the election of a mayor at large, to serve for a term of four years; prescribing his duties~ prescribing the method of filing nomination papers~ providing method of filling vacancy, and fixing ak~auai salary at $6000°00 and necessary ezpenses not to e~ceed $1500.00o PROPOSITION N0.2 (D) Election of First Mayor. Adds Section 20.1 to the Charter of the City of Bakersfield, which p~ovides that names of candidates f;or the office of the first mayor shall be sub~ mitted to the electors concurrently with the present pro- posed amendments to the charter, and if elected, to hold office from the first Monday after the effective date of these amendments, until after the first Monday after the first day of January, 1961. Putther provides for a special election to fill the office of mayor, to be held within ninety days from the effective date of these s_~isndments if mayor is not elected concurrently with these mnsn&nents as herein provided. Direct.. Primary Election and Presidential Primary Election held within said city on said date, and said Board of Supervisors was authorized to canvass the returns of said special election and to certify the results. thereof to this Council, and WZHEREAS, said special election was duly held pursuant to said orders of consolidation at the polling places prescribed for said State Consolidated Direct Primary E~ ction and Presidential Primary Election, and the votes cast thereat ~ere canvassed and the returns thereof made as provided by law; end WHERF~.S, the said Board of Supervisors and the Clerk thereof have duly canvassed the absentee ballots.cast at said special election, and said Board of Supervisors has adopted its resolutions stating the results of said special election and the Clerk of said Board has entered in the records of said Boa~d statements of said results, and the Clerk has transmitted to the Clerk of this Council certified copies of said resolutions and certified copies of said statements'and the same have been presented to this Council. NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of BakersfieldDOES HEREBY RESOLVE, DETERMINE, iND DECL2~E AS FOLLOWS: 1. That from the results of said special election certified to this Council as aforesaid, it appears and this Council hereby finds and declares that the total number of votes cast at the respective election precincts established for said special election upon the propositions stated in the recitals hereof and for and against said propositions, the total number of absentee votes cast at said election upon said propositions and for and against said propositions, and the total number of votes cast in said city upon said propositions and for and against said propositions, are as set forth in said Resolutions of the Board of Supervisors of Kern County, California, stating result of canvass of election returns of special municipal election'of the City of Bakersfield held June'-~, 19~6,'*copies'of~which resolutions are on file in the office of the.City Clerk. That the total votes cast on said propositions are as follows: Cityof Bakersfield Proposition No. 1 (C) yesg~_Z~7~7__ No~.5~. That from the results of said election this Council finds and declares that at said election a m'ajority Of the qualified electors voting thereat voted in favor of ratifying and did ratify the follow- ing charter amendments: PROPOSITION NO. 1. (C).
