WHEREAS, ~the Council of the City of Bakersfield is informed
and believes. that the California State Division of Highways is plan-
ning the construction of a north-south freeway to be located approxi-
mately 200 feet west ef and parallel to Oak Street, in the-City of
Bakersfield, and
The need for a diversion of the State highway traffic from
the Center of the City has been apparent for a long period of time,
and this Council has given thoughtful consideration to the ·problem
of dispersing the concentrated through-highway traffic in the mest
feasible manner, and
After studying the location of the freeway as proposed by
the. state, this Ceuncil feels that a more suitable location could
be programmed, thereby eliminating the necessity of driving a large~
number of our citizens from their homes, which, in many instances,
have been borne of years of planning, toil and care, and
It is the desire of this Council~ in the-interest of good
community planning and with a thought to the future development of,
and the increased population anticipated in, this area, to protest
the present plans of the State in its proposed location of the north-
seuth freeway, and in lieu thereof to recommend'a more advantageous
location for-such a highway or freeway, and~
Further, to recommend that this highway or freeway be given
priority over all others contemplated.in this area by the State.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of

ef the north-south freeway within the City.

urged to constr.uct the proposed north-south 'freeway sufficiently
westof Oak Street and west of the residential areas. in the County'
as not to interfere with the natural and anticipated growth and
development of'our community to the .west.

freewaywesterly of Bakersfield be given priority by the State Divi-
sion of Highways over all other freeways contemplated for this area
