HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 08-56 RESOEUTION N0. 8-56 WHEREAS, ~the Council of the City of Bakersfield is informed and believes. that the California State Division of Highways is plan- ning the construction of a north-south freeway to be located approxi- mately 200 feet west ef and parallel to Oak Street, in the-City of Bakersfield, and The need for a diversion of the State highway traffic from the Center of the City has been apparent for a long period of time, and this Council has given thoughtful consideration to the ·problem of dispersing the concentrated through-highway traffic in the mest feasible manner, and After studying the location of the freeway as proposed by the. state, this Ceuncil feels that a more suitable location could be programmed, thereby eliminating the necessity of driving a large~ number of our citizens from their homes, which, in many instances, have been borne of years of planning, toil and care, and It is the desire of this Council~ in the-interest of good community planning and with a thought to the future development of, and the increased population anticipated in, this area, to protest the present plans of the State in its proposed location of the north- seuth freeway, and in lieu thereof to recommend'a more advantageous location for-such a highway or freeway, and~ Further, to recommend that this highway or freeway be given priority over all others contemplated.in this area by the State. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield, as follows: ef the north-south freeway within the City. 2. That the State Division of Highways be and it is hereby urged to constr.uct the proposed north-south 'freeway sufficiently westof Oak Street and west of the residential areas. in the County' as not to interfere with the natural and anticipated growth and development of'our community to the .west. 3. That constructien of the proposed north-south highway or freewaywesterly of Bakersfield be given priority by the State Divi- sion of Highways over all other freeways contemplated for this area by the State. 4. That the' State Division of,High~ays keep this Council informed at all times as to the S~ate~s plans for the location and construction of this westerly north-south freeway.. 5. That certified copses of this ResolutiSn .be forwarded to Mr. Frank B..Durkee, Director of State Department of ~ublic W.rks, Sacramento, California, andMr. George T. McCoy, State Highway Engineer, Sacramento, California. ~ ........ O00 ..........
