~EREAS, for a period of months beginning in October; 19~%,
there has existed in Kern County some conftict.~among various groups,
composed of business and labor organizations connected with certain
phases' of the construction industry, which conflict has caused great
.financial hardship to the parties directly involved, and to thousands
of others not directly connected with the buiiding industry, and
The 'recent disagreement which has arisen between the Teamsters
Union and. the rock-and gravel and ready-mix transit companies of Horn
County threatens to prolong the period of harris.hip'which has been en-
dured for so many months both by people directly dependant upon said
building industry, and the entire co~m~unity, and
As a result of the strikes in recent months a serious stoppage
of construction work has occurred due to the inability to obtain the
necessary;mate'rials and as a further result thereof, the progress and
~e. volopment of the' community as a whole is being hindered not only in.
its building program, hut in its general economic welfare, and
It is the l~conviction of the people of this city, that concilia-
tory steps must be taken in the interest of the whole .comraunity.
NOW, THEREFOR]~!, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the'City of
Bakersfield, that the various rock and gravel and ready-mix transit
companies of Kern County and the Teamster,s Union are hereby urged to
arrive at an immediate settlement of their differences by arbitration
or by any other .amicable means, so that men may return to their employ-
ment and business may again go forward in the community.
