HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 02-56RESOLUTION NO. 2-56 WHEREAS, the recent devastation by flood waters throughout northern and central California which brought-death to many of our citizens, renews the all-important, unanimous and ever-existent questionof flood control and water conservation throughout the State of California. Water, while being one of our most vital resources, still remains a danger and threat to lives and property'in many portions of our State which are vulnerable to the unharnessed streams born of our two major mountain ranges. From the time of the rounding of our great State, as in the case of all new-born empires, water has played a highly significant factor in its ultimate development and growth and has converted many a desert and parched area into a land.of beauty and wealth. With the agricultural expansion which has come to our State in recent years, has also' come the knowledge that our water levels in certain localities are being sorely tried and are in fact, in such a state of depletion as to be critical. Since nature provides us with our sources of water for the benefit of man, and all too often for his destruction, it would seem most appropriate for us to plan immediately for a program. of water resource control and distribution and thus put to use where and when needed, a vitally important commodity, which otherwise may bring death and havoc within our State. The citizens of this State have been shocked into awareness of the disasters which could occur throughout this State by reason of floodin~ from mountainstreams,_and are-cognizan~.gf the importance of saving this very same water which also means life to our people and land. : P The Council of the City of BakerSfield, after reviewing the value and importance of our State's water resources, and fully realizing the extreme and immediate necessity for a state-wide program of water conservation and distribution, feels justified in requesting, for and on behalf of the citizens of this community, prompt action by the State. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of~the City of Bakersfield, that the Honorable Goodwin J. Knight, Governor of the State of California, be and he is hereby urged to call a special session of the State Legislature for the purpose of studying and resolving the water problems as they exist throughout the State, and of equalizing the distribution of the water supply of the State where needed. I ~EBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular meet- ing thereof held on the 3rd day of January, 1956, by the following vote: AYES: CARNAKIS, COLLINS, CROES, DCDL~f'.!, EVELET'J, S3~t~"/EiFZER, SULLIVAN..
