HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 31-62 RESOLUTION NO. RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD DESIGNATING MAY 13 THROUGH 19, 1962 AS NATIONAL POLICE WEEK. WHEREAS, as a result of the enactment of Senate Joint Reso- lution No. 65 of the Congress of the United· States, now 'known as Public Law No. 8754, the week of May 13·through 19, 1962 has been designated as "Policei Week" in~ r-ecognition 0f' the. contribution the Police Officers of·America have made to our'.civiliza'tion through their dedicated and selfless efforts in ·enforcing the laws 'of our cities, counties and states and of the United States,· regardless of the peril or hazard to themselves; and WHEREAS, President John F. Kennedy has been authorized and requested· by the Congress 'of the United States to issue a procla- mation inviting the people of the United States to· observe the period with appropriate ceremonies and activities as a tribute to all Peace Officers; and WHEREAS, in proposing and adopting this Law Congress felt that it would serve to inform the people of the United States of' the varied services rendered by. Law Enforcement Officers 'and encourage the help and cooperation of our citizens-for better law enforcement; and WHEREAS, the crime rate in the City of Bakersfield shows a decrease of four percent during the first three months of 1962 as compared with the same period of~ 1961, while crime is on the increase in other areas of this state, and the efforts of the local Police Officers are largely responsible for this decrease 'of criminal activity in this city; and WHEREAS, for a period of more than~ thirty years there has not been a child attending elementary or Junior High School killed in traffic within the City during such time aS school was in session or while children were going to or coming from school,' and that for the greater part this record is' due to the vigilance of Police Officers in enforcing traffic laws and .teaching-good traffic safety practices to youngsters; and WHEREAS, Police Officers are called upon at all hours of the day and night, every day in the year, to face and apprehend armed, dangerous and demented criminals so that such criminals may be brought before the Bar of .Justice for Itheir nefarious acts;" NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the council of the City of 'Bakersfield that the week of May 13 through 19, 1962 iS hereby designated as "National Police. Week" in .the City of Bakersfield in recognition of the heroic, commendable and vital services rendered by law enforcement officers of this City· o0o I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at a regular · .meeting thereof held on the 7th day of May, 1962, by the following vote: AYES: BALFANZ, CROES, DOOLIN, iV,,M'~!IB/~N',(S, MOSSMAN, RUCKER, STIEP-.N ABSENT, _ ~ ~AINING, CoUncil of the City ..of Bakersfield.
