HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 104-6914 e~ RESOLUTION NO. 104-69 A RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD OPPOSING APPLICATION OF THE SANTA FE RAILROAD COMPANY TO DISCONTINUE PASSENGER TRAINS 1 AND 2 OPERATING BETWEEN SAN FRANCISCO AND BAKERSFIELD VIA THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY. WHEREAS, the Santa Fe Railroad Company has filed an application with the Interstate Commerce Commission for permission to discontinue San Francisco Chief passenger trains 1 and 2 between San Francisco and Bakersfield; and WHEREAS, Santa Fe Railroad Company San Francisco Chief Trains 1 and 2 are the only existing rail passenger service between Bakersfield and San Francisco by the Santa Fe Company; and WHEREAS, over the past decade there has occurred a marked decrease in rail passenger service throughout the San Joaquin Valley by discontinuance of certain passenger trains; and WHEREAS, the United States Government in past years has given large subsidies, including land grants, to railroad companies for the express purpose of providing for the transportation of persons; and WHEREAS, railroads, as public utilities, have an obligation to the public to provide service of a character which may not always be the most profitable to the railroad; and WHEREAS, the entire State of California is experiencing a rapid growth which taxes to the utmost transportation service, particularly on the highways in California, and rather than add to this burden by decreasing passenger railroad service, additional and higher grade service by the railroads should be sought. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield that said City Council hereby declares itself in op'position to the ap'plication of the Santa Fe Railroad Company for withdrawal of 'passenger trains 1 and 2 between San Francisco and Bakersfield. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Interstate Commerce Commission be respectfully requested to hold 'public hearings on the subject application of Santa Fe Railroad Company and that said 'public hearings be held in Bakersfield or Fresno or both.
