RESOLUTION OF THE' COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
BAKERSFIELD CRITICIZING COUNCILMAN THOMAS
BRADLEY OF THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES FOR HIS
ENDORSEMENT OF THE BOYCOTT OF CALIFORNIA
TABLE GRAPES.
WHEREAS, agriculture is the largest industry in the State
of California and employs more people than any other single
industry in our State; and
WHEREAS, it is a matter of public record that Los Angeles
City Councilman Thomas Bradley has endorsed the United FarmWorkers'
boycott of. California table grapes; and
WHEREAS, Councilman Bradley's endorsement and others of
like nature have been highly detrimental to the people of California
and to California agriculture generally; and
WHEREAS, there is no indication that Councilman Bradley
has made any effort whatsoever to ascertain both sides of the
dispute; and
WHEREAS, it would appear that Councilman Bradley's
endorsement of said boycott is intended to create political gain
for himself at the expense of agriculture which is the largest
industry in the State of California and in the County of Kern; and
WHEREAS, the City of Bakersfield is on record with
numerous resolutions affirming our position that it is improper for
elected officials to take sides in labor management disputes; and
WHEREAS, this Council suggests that it would be common
courtesy for any elected official to make adequate on-the-spot
determination prior to making public utterances injurious to
Ca!ifornia's most important industry. _
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Bakersfield, California strongly objects to Los Angeles
City Councilman Bradley's ill-considered action in endorsing the
boycott of California table grapes and we recommend that he retract
said endorsement.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Council extends a
cordial invitation at any time to any elected public official in
or out of the State of California to come to this community and its
surrounding agricultural environs in order to make intelligent and
fair personal determinations before publicly condemning said area
for any reason whatsoever.
BE IT RESOLVED also that the City Clerk be instructed
to mail copies of this resolution to the Kern County Board of
Supervisors asking that concurrent action be taken. Also, that
copies of this resolution be mailed to Councilman Bradley and to
all members of the Los Angeles City Council and to the political
editor of the Los Angeles Times and that copies be made available
upon request of any citizen or municipality in the State of
California.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was
passed and adopted by the Council of the City of Bakersfield at
a regular meeting thereof held on the 28th day of April, 1969, by
the following vote:
