HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES NO 33-69RESOLUTION NO. 33-69 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF BAKERSFIELD REQUESTING THE DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS TO REEVALUATE TRAFFIC NEEDS AT MOUNT VERNON AVENUE. WHEREAS,-The California Highway Con~uission has adopted a resolution on September 19, 1958, declaring that certain section of State Highway Route 178, formerly State Route 57, in the City of Bakersfield and County of Kern, between M Street and 2.7 miles east of Morning Drive to be a freeway; and WHEREAS, on September 5, 1961 the County of Kern and the State of California entered into a freeway agreement covering that portion of State Highway Route 178 in the County of Kern between the East City Limit of Bakersfield and 900 feet East of Mount Vernon Avenue; and WHEREAS, on September 6, 1966, that portion of State Highway Route 178 between Mount Vernon Avenue and 1300 feet east of Oswell Street was annexed to the City of Bakersfield; and WHEREAS, a freeway agreement may be modified at any time by the mutual consent of the parties involved, as may become necessary for the best accomplishment through State and City cooperation of the whole freeway project for the benefit of the people of the State and of the City; and WHEREAS, in November, 1961 the Bakersfield City Council, Bakersfield City Planning Commission, Kern County Board of Super- visors and Kern County Planning Commission adopted a General Plan of the Bakersfield Metropolitan Area which designated Mount Vernon Avenue as a Major Arterial Highway with an interchange at the freeway; and WHEREAS, the City of Bakersfield has requested the State of California to change the Freeway Agreement at the intersection of Mount Vernon Avenue and Freeway 178 by Resolution 13-67 dated February 27, 1967; and WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works has awarded contract for extension of 178 Freeway to Oswell Street with partial interchange and work is in progress; and WHEREAS, the Division of Highways has studied the City's request and reviewed the proposal with the City's staff; NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Bakersfield, State of California, as follows: 1. That upon completion of the above-mentioned contract the Division of Highways reevaluate the traffic needs and, if warranted, the COLL~f~iSSiOn direct the Division of Highways to make whatever modifications are required to serve the traffic needs and avoid traffic congestion. 2. That the City Clerk is hereby directed to forward two (2) certified copies of this resolution to the Department of Public Works, Division of Highways, District VI, P. O.
